INDIANAPOLIS – Valparaiso junior Todd Vervynckt (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) and Milwaukee sophomore Laurie Bell (Poynton, England/Poynton) were named to the Capital One Academic All-District Men’s Soccer teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced on Thursday. Vervynckt was selected to the All-District V Team, while Bell earned All-District VI accolades.
With the selection, the duo will move on to the ballot for Academic All-American honors.
Vervynckt is one of two Crusaders to have started all 16 games in 2012. He is tied for the team lead with a pair of goals, registering the match-winner against Saint Joseph’s (Ind.) and also finding the back of the net to give Valpo the lead against a top-ten UC Santa Barbara side. The junior also picked up assists against Saint Joseph’s and on an insurance goal at Detroit.
In the classroom, Vervynckt owns a 3.97 cumulative grade point average as a mechanical engineering major. A member of the Horizon League Academic All-League squad last season as a sophomore, Vervynckt has also been named to the league’s Academic Honor Roll each semester eligible. He has also been named to the Dean’s List and received Presidential academic honors during this time at Valpo.
Bell continues to be among the Horizon League leaders in points (third with 18), goals (tied for second with seven) and assists (tied for fourth with four, just one off the league lead) following UWM's last outing. The sophomore was honored by the Horizon League office on Oct. 8 with his second League Player of the Week award in 2012.
He carries a 3.59 GPA in the classroom as an English/journalism major.
To be eligible for Academic All-District, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status, own a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 and be either a starter or key reserve.
