INDIANAPOLIS -- Green Bay women’s basketball standout Julia Wojta (Francis Creek, Wis./Mishicot) and Wright State track and field star Cassandra Lloyd (Springfield, Ohio/South) have been named the Horizon League nominees for the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
The Woman of the Year Award honors graduating student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, community service and leadership.
Wojta, the Horizon League Player of the Year, posted a 3.58 GPA during her four years at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, graduating in May. A team captain, Wojta led the Phoenix to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a 33-2 overall record. A John R. Wooden All-American, Wojta was the 18th overall pick in the WNBA Draft.
Off the court, Wojta put her Accounting and Business Administration degree to good use, serving as an accounting, finance and business tutor throughout her time at Green Bay. Wojta also worked on the volunteer income tax assistance program, helping those in need. For her efforts, Wojta received the Chancellor’s Leadership Medallion at Green Bay.
Lloyd has dominated the Horizon League Track and Field Championships like few before her, winning the 100-meter hurdles in each of her four years of competition. Additionally, Lloyd qualified for the NCAA Regionals in her final three years, reaching the NCAA Championships in her senior season in the 100-meter hurdles.
A Business Management major, Lloyd earned a 3.04 grade-point average. In her career, the team captain was named the Horizon League Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year in 2010 and 2011. She was a three-time Indoor Track Athlete of the Year in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
A longtime participant in the Wright State, Horizon League and NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAAC), Lloyd has volunteered for the Special Olympics, Dayton Boys and Girls Club and the March of Dimes.
From a field of nearly 500 nominees, 30 finalists - 10 from each division of the NCAA - will be invited to Indianapolis in October when the award-winner will be announced.
