Three games were on the schedule for Thursday but only the Valparaiso-UIC matchup was able to be played be on-again, off-again rain showers forced the third and fourth games of the Horizon League Baseball Tournament to be postponed.

TOWSON, Md. – Coryn Schmit (Hawthorn Hills, Ill./Lake Zurich) of the UIC softball team is one of only four infielders from 279 Division I softball programs in the nation to be honored as a Capital One Academic All-American, it was announced by CoSIDA Thursday morning. She was a first team selection this year after winning third team honors a year ago.

No. 4 Wright State rallied to defeat No. 5 Youngstown State 6-3 in the first game of the Horizon League Baseball Tournament at Eastwood Field.

Green Bay sophomore Michael Tenzer and UIC junior Jana Knoppe have been named the Horizon League's Scholar-Athletes of the Month for April. The award is voted on by Faculty Athletic Representatives from the conference's member institutions.

 



INDIANAPOLIS -- Valparaiso junior Chris Manning and Wright State senior Casey Henn have been named Horizon League Baseball Players of the Week for the period of May 13-19. 

Milwaukee claimed four of the five baseball awards for the 2013 season, the Horizon League announced on Tuesday.

 



The Valparaiso softball team earned its first NCAA Tournament victory in program history Saturday afternoon, defeating Central Michigan 7-4 in an elimination game in Ann Arbor, Mich.  By virtue of the win, the Crusaders lived to play another elimination game, but Valpo fell in the final game of the day to #18/22 California 6-0, as Jolene Henderson tossed a no-hitter.



The victory was the first by a Horizon League team in the NCAA Tournament since Wright State went 1-2 in the 2010 tournament.

The 2013 regular season concluded on Saturday as the final seeds were determined for next week’s Horizon League tournament in Niles, Ohio. 

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Three Horizon League softball players earned All-Region accolades from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Thursday. Loyola’s Lauren Moore and UIC’s Devin Miller were each voted to the Great Lakes Region Second Team, while Cleveland State’s Dara Toman earned a Midwest Region Second Team nod.

CHICAGO -- Former Detroit guard Ray McCallum (Beverly Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) will take part in the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Pre-Draft Camp this Thursday and Friday.
