INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Illinois-Chicago’s Ariel Kirby (Lake Villa, Ill.) and Loyola’s Alison Szykowny (Palos Heights, Ill.) have been named the Horizon League’s Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 13 - 19.

Opening the Sears BracketBusters X with losses in two nationally televised games, Horizon League men’s basketball teams rebounded to notch seven wins in the BracketBusters, recording one of the top winning percentages among conferences fully invested in the events.

The Detroit women’s basketball team had a chance to get a firm grasp on the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament with a win Thursday night, but Wright State defended its home court, knocking off the Titans, 91-82, to put both teams at 10-4 in the Horizon League. UIC was also victorious to improve on Thursday night, improving to 9-5 in the League to stay right on the heels of Detroit and Wright State.

Valentine’s Day left four teams crestfallen, while increasing the pressure on all 10 Horizon League men’s basketball teams in the final 11 days of the regular season as Butler, Green Bay, Valparaiso and Milwaukee all emerged with victories.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Cleveland State senior Yannick Goossens (The Hague, Netherlands) has been named Horizon League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, while UIC senior Mariya Kovaleva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) has earned Horizon League Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors, for the week of Feb. 6-12.

If anyone says they know what will happen in the final two weeks of the Horizon League men’s basketball regular season, they’re lying. Saturday proved to be another topsy-turvy day, with the teams at the top of the standings both falling.

Detroit, Valparaiso and UIC used big second half runs on Saturday to win in women’s basketball.
Detroit trailed on the road at Milwaukee by four at halftime, but outscored the Panthers 38-20 in the second half to get the win. Valparaiso was down one at Butler at halftime, but the Crusaders scored the first 10 points of the second half and never looked back in collecting the win, while UIC outscored Cleveland State by 15 in the second half to break open what was a close game throughout the first half.

Upheaval was the name of the game on Thursday evening, with the teams sitting in first and third place in the Horizon League knocked off their perches. Whether that continues on the League ladder this weekend remains to be seen, but with just two games separating the teams in third and eighth, chaos is bubbling just under the surface.
