INDIANAPOLIS – Two Saturday night thrillers set the field for the 2012 Horizon League Men’s Soccer Championships. Milwaukee and Loyola both won its respective ways into the field, setting up regional rivalry matches for Tuesday’s first round.

CHICAGO – The Horizon League leader in points and goals came through once again, as Adam Bedell converted on a penalty kick in the 85^th minute to lift the Detroit men's soccer team to a Horizon League Regular Season Championship with a 2-1 defeat of UIC at Flames Field.

INDIANAPOLIS – Valparaiso junior Todd Vervynckt (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) and Milwaukee sophomore Laurie Bell (Poynton, England/Poynton) were named to the Capital One Academic All-District Men’s Soccer teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced on Thursday. Vervynckt was selected to the All-District V Team, while Bell earned All-District VI accolades.

Cleveland State sophomores Mike Derezic (Cleveland, Ohio) and Brad Stuver (Twinsburg, Ohio)  led the Vikings to a 2-0 week and have been named the Horizon League men’s soccer Players of the Week. It is the first POWT honor this season for Derezic and the second for Stuver, who also won for the week of Oct. 1.

Three tense games provided a measure of separation in the Horizon League men’s soccer standings, with Detroit, Valparaiso and Cleveland State collecting key victories on Wednesday night.

Although Cleveland State and UIC both picked up wins on Saturday, Valparaiso's 2-0 road win at Detroit on Sunday was the highlight of the weekend as the Crusaders handed the Titans their first league loss of the season. On Friday, Wright State fell 2-1 in non-conference play against Oklahoma State.

Valparaiso sophomore midfielder Eric Nieto (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) has been named the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week in men's soccer and teammate Kyle Zobeck (Coralville, Iowa) has earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after the Crusaders went 2-0 during the week of Oct. 15-21. It is the first Player of the Week award for either player this season.

Valparaiso goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck (Coralville, Iowa) has been named one of 10 national finalists for the 2012 men's soccer Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

Rain fell around the Midwest on Wednesday as four Horizon League men's soccer teams competed in non-conference play. Detroit and Valparaiso both picked up wins while Green Bay and Loyola took losses.

INDIANAPOLIS -- UIC junior midfielder Slobodan Aleksov (Belgrade, Serbia) is the Horizon League Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Detroit sophomore goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and Milwaukee freshman keeper Connor Revsbeck (Lakeville, Minn.) have been named Co-Defensive Players of the Week for the week of Oct. 8-14. The award is the first of Aleksov’s and Revsbeck’s career, while Steinwascher is collecting the honor for the second time this season.
