NILES, Ohio -- Junior Zak Rivera went 5-for-6 with two home runs, two doubles and six RBIs to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team to a 12-7 win over Youngstown State Sunday afternoon in Niles, Ohio. The Panthers (22-29, 12-8 Horizon) avoided a sweep at the hands of the Penguins (28-25, 10-6 Horizon), who won the first three games of the series.
The hits came early and often for UWM, as it scored in eight of the nine innings and slugged out 17 hits on the day. Joining Rivera in the hit parade was junior Mike Goetz who collected three hits and senior Charlie Reschke, junior Joe Nowicki and freshman Jesse Hart who finished with two hits apiece.
Rivera got the Panthers out to a 3-0 lead with a solo home run in the first inning and a two-run single in the second. After allowing a pair of runs in the second inning, Milwaukee pushed its lead back up to three at 5-2 with a single run in both the third and fourth innings.

MILWAUKEE-Junior Joe Nowicki hit a bases loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two to help the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team to a doubleheader split against IPFW Wednesday night at Henry Aaron Field. The Panthers (21-26) took game two, 5-4, after falling to the Mastodons (24-24), 6-4, in game one.
In the seventh inning of game two, with the score knotted at 4-4, senior Steve Sanfilippo doubled to left center to lead off the inning. Junior Mike Goetz was intentionally walked and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by junior Jeremy Wilson. Another intentional walk, this time to junior Zak Rivera, loaded the bases with one out. Nowicki followed with a single to the gap in right center, scoring Sanfilippo with the winning run.
Sophomore Mike Rauwerdink pitched five scoreless innings in the start, working out of jams in the second, third and fourth innings to strand eight Mastodon base runners. The Sheboygan native struck out three and scattered five hits and three walks on the day. Juniors Korey Keller and Jed Dolske each allowed two runs, including a pair of sacrifice flies off Dolske in the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4. Dolske (2-1) picked up the win in relief after his first blown save in nine attempts.

Entering the final weekend of the collegiate baseball regular-season, two teams are vying for the right to be called the "2005 Horizon League Baseball Regular-Season Champions."
The University of Illinois at Chicago (34-18-1), the three-time defending regular-season champion, currently owns the top spot with a 14-6 League record after finishing its conference schedule last weekend with a four-game sweep of then-League leading Youngstown State University.
Second-place University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (21-26), however, controls its own destiny with an 11-5 League mark heading into a four-game weekend set at Youngstown State. The Panthers and Penguins will play a single game Friday, a doubleheader Saturday and another single game Sunday at Eastwood Field in Niles. A Panthers sweep would garner UWM the outright regular-season title. Three wins would result in a co-championship with UW-Milwaukee earning the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Horizon League Championship by virtue of a 3-1 record versus Wright State University, compared to UIC's 1-3 mark against the Raiders.
The Flames, who will conclude the regular season Thursday with a non-conference home game against Indiana University-Purdue University/Fort Wayne (IPFW), can finish no worse than second and have clinched a bye in the first round of the tournament.
