Cleveland State and Youngstown State finished runner-up in their respective tournaments, while UIC played some of the nation’s toughest teams in the Chicago Classic to highlight the Horizon League volleyball schedule this weekend.

Loyola University Chicago has appointed Chris Muscat as the ninth head women's volleyball coach in program history, Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek announced today. A graduate of UCLA, Muscat comes to Loyola following a successful two-year stint as an assistant coach at the University of Missouri, capped by a trip to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament this season.

Saturday's semifinal round at the 2009 Horizon League Volleyball Championship featured four teams determined to extend their season by at least one more match. In the tournament atmosphere few things go as planned, and winning takes a whole lot of desire, intensity, and guts.

I can tell I'm a championship rookie by the pure joy I get when I arrive. I am definitely starting to understand the excitement that surrounds these times of year. That's exactly how I'd describe the atmosphere inside Woodling Gymnasium tonight, as the Horizon League Volleyball Championship got underway.
