Milwaukee Claims 2018 #HLWSOC Championship
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The top-seeded Milwaukee Panthers earned a 1-0 win over No. 2 seed Cleveland State on Saturday to clinch the 2018 Horizon League Women’s Soccer Championship on Saturday from Engelmann Stadium. The Panthers earn their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013.
After a defensive battle in the first half that saw only one shot on goal, Kelli Swenson would score the match’s only goal in the 57th minute for the Panthers. The Defensive Player of the Year took a free kick near midfield and placed the ball in front of the goal and it took a bounce into the back of the net.
Milwaukee held on to the one-goal advantage for the final 30 minutes as freshman Elaina LaMacchia made three second-half saves to hold on to the shutout and propel the Panthers into the NCAA Tournament.
Milwaukee will enter the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Tournament for the eighth time since 2008. The 2018 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship bracket will be announced Monday, Nov. 5 at 4:30 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.
