All-Time Cecil N. Coleman Medal of Honor Winners

INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI volleyball’s Kori Waelbroeck and Northern Kentucky baseball’s Will Haueter have been named the 2017-18 Cecil N. Coleman Medal of Honor recipients.

The Coleman Medal of Honor, first awarded in 1981, is the Horizon League’s most prestigious individual honor. The award is presented annually to the top male and female student-athletes who demonstrate outstanding achievement in academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the Horizon League with this award. Honestly, there’s been so many opportunities at IUPUI to get involved in community service and engage with professors that it hasn’t been difficult to find ways to continue to be involved,” Waelbroeck said. “At times it’s been difficult to balance academics and being a student-athlete, but I’m the kind of person that when something has to be done, I try to get it done. To earn one of the Horizon League’s highest honors is particularly rewarding because I know the caliber of student-athletes across all the schools in the league is incredibly high.”

On the volleyball court, Waelbroeck led the way for the Jags in their inaugural season in the Horizon League, earning All-League honors for the third time in her career and placing in the top 50 nationally with 456 total kills in her senior season. In the IUPUI record book, Waelbroeck ranks sixth with 1,197 kills and fourth with 288 total blocks.

The Evansville, Indiana native earned the 2018 IUPUI Mel Garland Distinguished Student-Athlete Award, given to the department’s top senior performer and was also a Second Team Academic All-American this season, the first volleyball player in IUPUI history to earn that honor. Waelbroeck finished her Community Health degree program in seven semesters and began an Epidemiology Masters of Public Health this spring.

“I’m happy for Kori and our entire volleyball program for her to earn the Coleman Medal of Honor. It’s a testament to her and all the ladies in our program for the work they do in the classroom and on the court,” stated IUPUI head coach Steve Payne. “She’s a true example of a standout student-athlete and has continued to set the example for those to come through our program. I’m proud of what she’s accomplished and know she’ll continue to do great things moving forward.”

In the community, Waelbroeck volunteered with numerous organizations including the IUPUI Student Outreach Clinic, Special Olympics Indiana, and Timmy Global Health at IUPUI, also serving as an Academic Mentor at the IUPUI Bepko Learning Center and working as a Communicable Disease Intern with IUPUI Environmental Health and Safety.

Will Haueter is the first Northern Kentucky student-athlete to earn the Cecil N. Coleman Medal of Honor.

“Winning this award is special because of the great student-athletes across the Horizon League. To be in the conversation is great in itself, but to stand out amongst my peers and win the award is a humbling feeling,” stated Haueter. “This award is also special for me because I take pride in making the people who have helped me along the way proud. Any award I receive reflects the work they have done to push me forward in a positive direction."

On the diamond, Haueter was a 2018 All-Horizon League First Team selection, leading the league with a .360 average. Haueter ranks fifth all-time in the Norse record book with 46 career doubles, posting 19 this season, second in the Horizon League.

“Congratulations to Will on being named the recipient of the Cecil N. Coleman Medal of Honor. Will is an outstanding role model on the field and in the classroom, and he is also very involved with NKU’s student-athlete advisory committee and many community service projects that the baseball team participates in each year,” noted NKU baseball head coach Todd Asalon.

Haueter was named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America First Team by CoSIDA as well as the All-District Academic Team. The Canton, Ohio native graduated in the spring with a Finance degree and received the prestigious Regents Award from NKU, as well as being named NKU’s Most Outstanding Student in Finance.

The NKU baseball program, including Haueter, earned the 2018 Bobby Fong Award for displaying the Horizon League’s core values of integrity, respect, and stewardship. Haueter is a Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative and volunteers with Team Impact, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, the Down Syndrome Association, and Reading Across America.
