DETROIT- The 2019 Little Caesars Horizon League Basketball Championships concluded on Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena with top-seeded Wright State winning the women’s game and in the nightcap No. 2 Northern Kentucky captured its second title in three seasons. Tonight’s playmakers made a major impact on today’s Motor City Madness championship matchups.
Emily Vogelpohl, Wright State
Wright State defeated Green Bay 55-52 in Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday afternoon to win the Motor City Madness Women’s Championship. Vogelpohl led the Raiders with 14 points, five rebounds and two assists. She started the first half of the game with only two points, but grabbed two rebounds and had one assist on the floor. Vogelpohl went off in the second half of the game by snagging three rebounds, having one assist and scoring 12 of Wright State’s 28 points. The senior had one 3-pointer and came in clutch from the free-throw line going 3-for-4.
Michal Miller, Wright State
The Raiders took down Green Bay 55-52 in the women’s championship matchup and Miller was the second-highest scoring member for Wright State, scoring 13 points against the Phoenix. She was the top scorer for the Raiders in the first half, putting up eight points with one 3-pointer. She went 3-for-4 from the free-throw line and pulled down four rebounds for Wright State. Miller put up another five points in the second half of the championship bout, going 2-for-3 from the floor. For her performance all championship long, she was named the Tournament MVP. Wright State achieved an NCAA tournament berth with their first tournament title since 2013-14.
Jalen Tate, Northern Kentucky
Northern Kentucky defeated Wright State on Tuesday evening 77-66 to win the 2019 Little Caesars Horizon League Men’s Basketball Championship. Tate dominantly led the Norse with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists to defeat the Raiders. He went 5-for-7 from the floor in the first half including 2-for-3 from deep, pulled down one rebound, and managed two assists. In the second half, Tate shot 2-for-3 from the field with four more rebounds and another two assists. The Norse earned an NCAA tournament berth as they claim their second Motor City Madness title in the last three years.
