2018 #HLMSOC Championship Central
The 2018 #HLMSOC championship was hosted by Wright State for the second time in three years, as the Raiders finished 6-1-1 in HL play and ended the regular season nationally ranked to
earn the regular season title.
The championship began on campus sites with two quarterfinal matches as No. 3 Oakland hosted No. 6 Milwaukee and No. 4 Green Bay welcomed No. 5 IUPUI.
The road teams won the day beginning with the sixth-seeded Panthers earning a scrappy 1-0 win over Oakland.
The other quarterfinal match was incredibly exciting with 90 minutes not being enough time to decide it as the match headed to overtime. The Jags would find the golden goal to complete the upset and move on to the semifinals.
The championship shifted to Wright State for the semifinals as for the first time in HL history the semifinal matches were both decided by penalty kicks.
The host-Raiders battle No. 6 Milwaukee for a right to play in the championship match with regulation ending 1-1 and neither team finding the game-winner in the overtime periods. WSU jumped out 2-0 in the shootout with Jackson Dietrich slotting the game-winner on the fifth and final kick to win PKs, 4-3.
In the other semifinal match the two-time defending tournament champions Flames were in a battle with IUPUI as the Jags grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute. UIC found the equalizer in the 80th minute to force overtime and eventually a PK shootout. The Flames went 4-for-4 from the penalty area capped off by Jordan Moore finishing to the lower-right post.
The championship match featured the top-two seeds in Wright State and UIC with the Flames coming out on fire with a pair of first-half goals. WSU made it a one-goal match in the 82nd minute, but UIC would not be denied as Josiah Ash scored his second goal of the match to secure the championship.
It marked the sixth tournament championship for UIC and marked the eighth time since 1999 that the Flames earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
