INDIANAPOLIS –
Week 8 of the #HLMBB begins this weekend with Cleveland State and Wright State remaining on top of the standings, while Northern Kentucky has won four straight followed by Detroit Mercy and Oakland having won five out of their last six HL contests.

HLMBB NEWS & NOTES
• Wright State jumped up to No. 11 in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll and may have one of the most balanced teams in the country. The Raiders are the No. 1 rebounding team in the country at 42.9 boards per game and also No. 1 in defensive rebounding at 31.0. Offensively, Wright State is 23rd in the country in scoring (81.8) and 25th in country in shooting percentage (48.9). Defensively, WSU ranks 10th in the country in defensive field-goal percentage (38.7) and first in the HL in scoring defense (65.0).

• The Horizon League has some of the top passers in the NCAA as three HL players rank in the top-35 in assists led by Oakland’s Moore who is leading the nation at 8.0 per game, followed by UIC’s Teyvion Kirk ranking 13th with 6.2 and Te’Jon Lucas of Milwaukee coming in 35th with 5.5.

• #HLMBB boasts two of the top rebounders in the country as both rank top-20 nationally led by IUPUI’s Elyjah Goss who is tops in the HL and 13th in the NCAA with 10.6 boards per game, followed by WSU’s Love ranking 18th nationally with 10.1.   

• Cleveland State is 12-2 to start the Horizon League season bolstered on the defensive end as the Vikings rank top-2 in scoring defense (66.1 points), defensive field-goal percentage (39.9 percent) and steals (8.6 steals) during HL play.

• Detroit Mercy is one of the hottest teams in the Horizon League right now as the Titans are 5-1 since the calendar turned over to 2021. As a team, Detroit Mercy is tops in the Horizon League averaging over 10 triples per game and top-3 in scoring offense, field-goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage. Antoine Davis leads the Titans as he is second during HL play in scoring at 22.3 points per game, hitting just under four 3-pointers per contest, and is top-5 in assists with 4.9.

• Northern Kentucky is on a four-game winning streak and is now 7-5 during Horizon League play. Over the four-game stretch, Trevon Faulkner has stepped up in a big way for NKU averaging 19.0 points and just under five boards per contest including registering his first career double-double last week vs. UIC with 25 points and 12 rebounds. The Norse travel to Milwaukee this weekend in a matchup of the teams currently seeded No. 4 and 5 for the Horizon League Basketball Championship.

• Oakland has won five out of its last six contests including taking both games on the road last week. The Golden Grizzlies hold the second-best scoring offense during Horizon League play and is led by Jalen Moore. The JUCO transfer is leading the nation in assists while averaging 20.1 points per game during #HLMBB play. He is also No. 1 during HL play with seven 20-point performances and seven double-doubles.

• Purdue Fort Wayne continues to be one of the best shooting teams in the country. Nationally, the Mastodons are 14th in field-goal percentage at 50.2 percent, including ranking sixth in 3-point shooting team at 40.7 percent from long range.

• A pair of Horizon League standouts were selected to the Lou Henson Award Midseason Watch List this week with Wright State’s Loudon Love and Oakland’s Jalen Moore making the list. The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in the country.
