INDIANAPOLIS (May 27, 2025) – RMU women’s soccer student-athlete Brenna Murray and Wright State baseball have been named the recipients of our annual Horizon League Sportsmanship Award.
Major Voices:
Horizon League Commissioner Julie Roe Lach
- “We are honored to recognize Brenna and the Wright State baseball program with our second annual Horizon League Sportsmanship awards. Our League has made a point to recognize outstanding sportsmanship and we are proud of the incredible actions demonstrated by all of these student-athletes.”
Brenna Murray, RMU Women’s Soccer
- “Thank you to the Horizon League and RMU for honoring me with this award! It means the world to be recognized for my character in addition to what I’ve been able to accomplish on the field the past two years in the league. I have learned first-hand how competitive drive and sportsmanship go hand-and-hand. Being a student-athlete has taught me more about myself and the person I want to be more than anything else! I am so grateful for all the opportunities I have had to lead, serve, and connect through my sport and across campus. It has always been a priority for me to carry myself in a way that allows me to influence people for the better and I look forward to whatever happens next!”
Wright State Baseball Head Coach Alex Sogard
- "It’s an honor for our team to receive the team sportsmanship award. We talk as a team daily about playing the game hard and playing the game the right way. It’s a testament to our guys and how they go about their business in the classroom and on the field."
Wright State Junior Infielder Patrick Fultz
- "In the Raidergang, sportsmanship means recognizing the privilege and honor of competition. We understand that with this opportunity comes the responsibility to respect the game, our teammates, and our opponents. It’s not just about winning, it’s about how we carry ourselves on and off the field. Treating others with respect and dignity is not just a goal, it’s who we are."
Dig Deeper:
- The RMU administration described Murray as “an exceptional leader both on the field and off who not only leads by example but goes above and beyond to help others across the world become better human beings through her leadership skills.”
- Murray was selected to be part of the 2024 NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar as well as being invited to join the prestigious NCAA postgraduate internship program in 2025-26 as the Inclusion, Education, and Community Engagement postgraduate intern and was the recipient of the women’s soccer sportsmanship award for the Horizon League in the fall.
- Wright State baseball hosted the United States Air Force Academy for a non-League matchup intended to highlight the university’s deep military connectedness. At a dinner for both teams after the game, Wright State players took the initiative to mix tables with Air Force players, engaging as peers rather than opponents. The Raiders insisted their guests be served first and created a welcoming, respectful environment.
- “What followed was an evening of genuine connection—players from both teams swapping stories, laughing, and asking thoughtful questions about each other's lives, from military academy routines to the day-to-day experience of a student-athlete at Wright State. The camaraderie grew so strong that the gathering had to be ended at 10 p.m., or the teams might have stayed all night,” shared the WSU administration.
- The League’s Competition Cabinet selected the award winners.
