INDIANAPOLIS -- Nineteen individuals have earned 2008-09 Horizon League women's basketball postseason honors. The list is highlighted by seven specialty award winners -- Matt Bollant (Coach of the Year), Traci Edwards (Co-Player of the Year), Kailey Klein (Co-Player of the Year), Jasmine Bailey (Newcomer of the Year), Dominique Butler (Co-Defensive Player of the Year), Shawnita Garland (Co-Defensive Player of the Year) and Kayla Tetschlag (Sixth Player of the Year).

Bollant earns the League's top coaching honor after guiding the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay to a 26-3 regular-season record and 18-0 conference mark. He is now 52-9 overall and 35-1 in conference games since taking over the Green Bay program two years ago.

The Phoenix becomes just the third team in League history to run the table in conference action and the first to win 18 affairs. Green Bay has won at least 20 contests in 10 straight seasons, and has received a postseason berth each year since 1998.

Edwards, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, is the Horizon League's all-time leading scorer (2,274 points) and the first woman in school, League or state history to record 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.

The Menasha, Wis., native becomes a two-time Horizon League Player of the Year (2008) and four-time, first-team selection (2006, 2007, 2008). She leads the circuit in scoring (17.9) and rebounding (9.1) while ranking second in blocked shots (1.4) and fourth in field-goal percentage (.545).

Klein, a junior at Cleveland State University, ranks second in the League in scoring (17.1), third in free-throw percentage (.819) and sixth in assists (3.2).

The Cherry, Ill., native has helped Cleveland State improve its conference record in each of the past three seasons. The defending Horizon League Tournament-champion Vikings enter this week having won 11 of their last 15 affairs.

Bailey, a freshman at the University of Illinois at Chicago, leads all Horizon League freshmen in scoring (10.6), rebounding (6.5), steals (1.6) and field-goal percentage (.494). The St. Louis native has reached the 10-point plateau on 17 occasions this season, including her last seven outings.

Garland and Butler have helped Cleveland State to Horizon League top-four rankings in scoring defense (4th, 59.9), field-goal percentage defense (4th, .391) and three-point percentage defense (4th, .330).

Garland, a sophomore from Charleston, W.Va., and Butler, a senior from Milwaukee, have also contributed in other ways this season. Garland ranks second in the League in steals (2.9), fifth in three-point percentage (.405) and seventh in scoring (12.3). Butler places fourth in rebounding (6.8) and seventh in free-throw accuracy (.772).

Edwards and Klein are joined on the Horizon League's first team by a trio of seniors -- Green Bay's Rachel Porath and Lavesa Glover, and Valparaiso University's Launa Hochstetler.

Hochstetler ranks 10th in the League in scoring (11.5), while Glover places 12th (10.9) and Porath is tied for 16th (10.6). Hochstetler also leads the loop in assists (4.7), while Porath paces the circuit in three-point percentage (.453).

Garland is joined on the Horizon League's second team by UIC junior Jessie Miller, Wright State University sophomore Shey Peddy, University of Detroit Mercy senior Sandi Brown and Green Bay sophomore Celeste Hoewisch.

Brown ranks third in the conference in scoring (13.0), while Miller ranks fourth (12.9), Peddy occupies sixth (12.4) and Hoewisch is knotted for 16th (10.6). Peddy also tops the loop chart in steals (2.9).

Bailey is joined on the All-Newcomer Team by Valparaiso junior transfer Lauren Kenney, UIC freshman Shameia Green, Wright State freshman Molly Fox and Milwaukee sophomore Ashley Imperiale.

Butler, Garland, Porath and Peddy are joined on the All-Defensive Team by Butler University junior Melanie Thornton.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has claimed the top seed in the 2009 Speedway Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship for the 10th time in the past 11 seasons. The winner of the League's 10-team tournament earns an automatic berth into the 64-team NCAA Women's Basketball Championship.

Green Bay, 26-3 overall and 18-0 in the Horizon League, becomes just the third team in League history to run the table in conference action and the first to win 18 games. The Phoenix owns a 147-13 (.919) League record over the past 10 seasons, and has won at least 20 contests each year during the stretch.

Green Bay has clinched at least a share of the Horizon League's regular-season title in each of the past 11 campaigns, which ranks as the nation's longest active streak. The Phoenix has also guaranteed itself a 32nd consecutive winning season, dating back to 1977-78.

Butler University (19-10, 14-4) earns the tournament's No. 2 seed after tying its school record for most League wins in a season. The Bulldogs, who won eight straight in December and January, have posted a .500-or-better conference record in each of the past six years.

Cleveland State University (18-12, 12-6), which has improved its League record in each of the past three seasons, earns the tournament's No. 3 seed. The defending tournament-champion Vikings have won 11 of their last 15 affairs.

Valparaiso University (16-13, 10-8), in just its second season as a Horizon League member, earns the tournament's No. 4 seed. The Crusaders knocked off two BCS opponents during non-conference play and have won six of their last nine tilts.

No. 5 Wright State University (14-15, 10-8), No. 6 University of Illinois at Chicago (14-15, 8-10) and No. 7 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (12-17, 7-11) occupy the tourney's next three positions, while No. 8 University of Detroit Mercy (11-18, 7-11), No. 9 Loyola University Chicago (8-20, 3-15) and No. 10 Youngstown State University (3-26, 1-17) sit in the final three spots.

The 2009 Speedway Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship kicks off with two first-round games on Monday -- Loyola at Detroit (7 p.m. ET) and Youngstown State at Milwaukee (8 p.m.).

Wednesday's schedule includes four quarterfinal contests -- the #8/9 winner at Green Bay (8 p.m.), the #7/10 winner at Butler (7 p.m.), UIC at Cleveland State (7 p.m.) and Wright State at Valparaiso (8 p.m.).

Friday's semifinal affairs will be hosted by the highest remaining seed at 5:30 and 8 p.m. local time. Sunday's championship game, on ESPNU at 1 p.m., will be held at the site of the semifinals.

Cleveland State posted a 70-56 win over Wright State in the 2008 Horizon League Tournament finale. The Vikings moved on to the NCAA Championship, while Green Bay received a WNIT berth. The Phoenix has reached postseason play every year since 1998.

HORIZON LEAGUE TEAM NOTES

BUTLER BULLDOGS (1-4 overall, 0-0 HL)

  • Throughout the spring, Butler will celebrate its 100th season of baseball. To date, the Bulldogs have tallied a 1,145-1,333-11 all-time record, eight conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances.
  • Butler has 11 seniors on its 2009 roster -- the most in the Horizon League this season.
  • Senior Colin Ziegel picked up the Bulldogs' first home run and grand slam of the season in the opener at Marian College. He belted a bases-loaded bomb in the eighth inning against the Knights.
  • Butler is scheduled to play three games at professional ballparks this spring. The Bulldogs will square off with Dayton at Victory Field (Indianapolis Indians) on March 31 and Milwaukee at Miller Park (Milwaukee Brewers) in a May 14 doubleheader.

CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (1-5 overall, 0-0 HL)

  • Cleveland State went 0-2 at the Austin Peay Invitational, falling to the host Governors (6-0) and Indiana (9-1). CSU's game with Ball State was cancelled due to inclement weather.
  • The Vikings collected just seven hits in their two games over the weekend. Junior Ryan Franks was the lone player with multiple base knocks, finishing with one in each game.
  • Senior Sam Suitca has worked four innings of relief without allowing a run this year. He has given up just three hits and opponents are hitting just .200 against him.

MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (3-4 overall, 0-0 HL)

  • After starting the season 0-4, Milwaukee went 3-0 to win the Jacksonville Invitational.
  • Milwaukee posted a 19-11 win over #25 Michigan on Friday -- its first win over a ranked team since March 5, 2006.
  • Each starter had at least one hit and one run against Michigan. In addition, eight of the nine spots in the order also had at least one run batted in.

UIC FLAMES (0-6 overall, 0-0 HL)

  • Senior Jake Carr crushed his first homer of the year and collected four RBI in a twinbill on Saturday at Alabama.
  • The Flames head to Nashville this weekend for a four-game series against Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt.
  • This is the third straight season that UIC will play Vanderbilt. Last March, the Flames picked up a victory over the #5 Commodores at Hawkins Field when Jake Carr smacked a go-ahead, two-run double with two outs in the ninth.

VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (4-3 overall, 0-0 HL)

  • Valparaiso began the campaign 4-1 -- its best start since 1969.
  • Valparaiso's pitching staff allowed just a .238 batting average through its first five games this season.
  • Valparaiso has already taken two doubleheaders in 2009 (Morehead State and Arkansas-Little Rock) after sweeping just one in all of 2008.
  • Valparaiso stole eight bases through its first five contests this year after recording just 34 in all of 2008.
  • Freshman Kyle Muhlsteff drove in four runs on Sunday in the twinbill against UALR.

WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (1-7 overall, 0-0 HL)

  • Wright State heads to UNC-Wilmington this weekend with some interesting storylines. WSU men's basketball coach Brad Brownell once led UNCW to the NCAA Tournament, and Raiders assistant baseball coach, Matt Smith, will sit in the opposite dugout of his brother, Kyle Smith, who is a pitcher for Kent State.
  • Freshman Tristan Moore doubled in his first collegiate at-bat at Tulane and followed that up with a single and run. He also tripled in the series finale against the Green Wave and reached base four times in his opening weekend.
  • Junior Alex Kaminsky picked up Wright State's first victory of the season by tossing 6.2 innings of relief in the opener at Tulane. Kaminsky fanned three and walked only one en route to his 10th career win.

YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (2-3 overall, 0-0 HL)

  • Youngstown State earned its 1,000th baseball victory on Friday at Virginia Military Institute. In 55 seasons, the all-time record stands at 1,001-958-6. Just under half of those wins (489) came under coach Dom Rosselli from 1948 to 1985. YSU has won 584 games since moving to Division I in 1982.
  • The Penguins rallied from four runs down in both wins at VMI over the weekend. YSU trailed, 5-1, after five innings on Friday before outscoring the Keydets, 6-1, in the final four frames. The Penguins trailed, 4-0, through five innings on Saturday and outscored VMI, 9-0, the rest of the way. Junior Jacke Healey had the go-ahead RBI in the ninth inning of both games - a two-run homer with two outs on Friday and one-out double on Saturday.

    HORIZON LEAGUE TEAM NOTES

BUTLER BULLDOGS (17-10 overall, 12-4 HL)

  • Butler's 12 wins in League play are the most since 1997-98 and the most under head coach Beth Couture. The win total is also just two shy of matching the school record of 14, set in 1992-93.
  • The Bulldogs are 14-2 when holding opponents to fewer than 60 points and 13-0 when their foes score 50 or fewer.
  • Sophomore Brittany Bowen has averaged a squad-best 13.1 points over the last 19 games. She has paced the team in scoring seven times and boasts 15 double-figure performances during the stretch.
  • After scoring just 19 points in Saturday's first half against Green Bay, the Bulldogs erupted for 45 points in the second half on 59 percent shooting from the field.
  • Sophomore Azjah Bass went 6-of-8 from the floor and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc to finish with a season-high 14 points against the Phoenix.

CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (18-10 overall, 12-4 HL)

  • Cleveland State has won a season-best five straight games and 11 of its last 13 overall.
  • The Vikings extended their school-record Horizon League win total to 12 with victories over UIC and Loyola last week.
  • Junior Stephaine Crosley grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds on Thursday at UIC. It was the most rebounds by a Viking since Audra Cook had 17 on Jan. 13, 2000.
  • Cleveland State shot a season-high .582 (32-for-55) at UIC, marking the second-best performance from the field in school history. CSU also dished out a League season-best 26 assists on its 32 field goals.
  • Junior Kailey Klein had 14 points and 11 rebounds on Saturday at Loyola -- her third straight double-double against the Ramblers.

DETROIT TITANS (9-18 overall, 5-11 HL)

  • Freshman Lauren Allen led Detroit with a personal-best 17 points -- on 8-of-16 from the floor -- Saturday against Wright State.
  • Freshman Talicia Washington tied for a game-high seven rebounds -- in just 20 minutes -- vs. the Raiders.

GREEN BAY PHOENIX (25-3 overall, 17-0 HL)

  • Green Bay received 12 votes in this week's Associated Press poll, and 16 votes in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll.
  • Green Bay leads the nation in scoring defense (51.0), ranks third in turnover margin (+6.89) and eighth in field-goal percentage (.461) and steals (12.3).
  • Green Bay will post its best conference season in school history if it can knock off Milwaukee on Saturday. The Phoenix owns two unbeaten League seasons, but has never gone 18-0.
  • On Saturday at Butler, senior Lavesa Glover became the second Green Bay player this season to notch 1,000 career points. Senior Rachel Porath hit the milestone on Dec. 20 vs. Marquette.
  • Head coach Matt Bollant is now 34-1 in Horizon League regular-season games. Green Bay has also won 28 straight regular-season conference home games.

LOYOLA RAMBLERS (8-18 overall, 3-13 HL)

  • Loyola finished the season just 1-8 in Horizon League home games. The record tied its fewest home wins during a conference season since 1999-2000.

INDIANAPOLIS --- Butler University sophomore forward Matt Howard was named Player of the Year to highlight the Horizon League's men's basketball 2008-09 All-League Teams and specialty award winners, which were announced Monday (March 2) by the League office.

Butler freshman guard/forward Gordon Hayward was voted Newcomer of the Year and Brad Stevens was named Coach of the Year as the #24/23 Bulldogs won their third consecutive regular-season title (25-4, 15-3 Horizon League) despite losing five of their top seven scorers from last year's League championship team.

Cleveland State University senior guard Cedric Jackson earned the Defensive Player of the Year award, while University of Wisconsin-Green Bay senior guard Ryan Tillema was selected Sixth Man of the Year.

Howard, Hayward and Tillema were joined on the All-League First Team by Cleveland State senior J'Nathan Bullock and University of Illinois at Chicago senior Josh Mayo.

The All-League Second Team featureed Jackson, along with Wright State University junior Todd Brown, Green Bay sophomore Rahmon Fletcher, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee junior Tone Boyle and Valparaiso University senior Urule Igbavboa.

The player, coach and newcomer of the year awards as well as the All-League and All-Newcomer Teams were voted on by the League's head coaches, sports information directors and selected media members.

Joining Jackson on the All-Defensive Team were Green Bay senior Terry Evans, UIC senior Scott VanderMeer, Howard and Wright State senior Will Graham. Evans was selected the League's inaugural Defensive Player of the Year last season. The defensive awards and Sixth Man of the Year were voted upon only by the League's 10 head coaches.

Howard is the third Butler player in the last four seasons to be named the Horizon League's Player of the Year, following Brandon Polk (2005-06) and Mike Green (2007-08). A native of Connersville, Ind., Howard ranks fourth in the League in scoring (14.3 ppg) and third in rebounding (6.9 rpg) and leads the circuit with a 55.2 field-goal percentage. He is the first non-senior to be selected Player of the Year since Rashad Phillips of the University of Detroit Mercy won his first of two awards as a junior in 1999-2000 and the first sophomore to be so honored since Parrish Casebier of the University of Evansville in 1991-92.

Hayward is the third Butler player in a row to garner Newcomer of the Year accolades, succeeding Howard and Green. A Brownsburg, Ind., native, Hayward paces all League newcomers with 13.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game to rank among the top six in the conference in both categories. He is the first freshman to earn a spot on the All-League First Team since T.J. Lux of Northern Illinois University in 1995-96.

After winning the Horizon League championship a year ago with a senior-dominated team, Stevens directed this year's Butler squad to the top spot with no seniors and only two juniors on the roster and three true freshmen in the starting lineup. He owns an overall record of 55-8 and a League record of 31-5 in two seasons at Butler.

Jackson led the League in steals for the second consecutive season with 3.0 per game and also averaged 5.5 rebounds per contest. The Columbus, N.J., native helped Cleveland State rally for a third-place tie in the regular-season standings at 12-6 after starting the conference schedule with a 4-5 mark.

After missing the season's first seven games, Tillema adapted to a new role off the bench as a senior and flourished, averaging 17.4 points per game to top the current League statistics and lead Green Bay to a second-place regular-season finish. A native of Randolph, Wis., he also leads the conference with 2.9 three-pointers per game.

The 2009 Speedway Horizon League Men's Basketball Championship begins Tuesday with first-round games at campus sites. Action then moves to Indianapolis and historic Hinkle Fieldhouse on the Butler campus for a second-round doubleheader on Friday and the semifinals on Saturday. Friday's games will be available live on the Horizon League Network (www.horizonleaguenetwork.tv) at 6 and 8 p.m. ET, with Saturday's contests live on ESPNU at 7 and 9 p.m.

The higher-remaining seed after the semifinals earns the right to host the championship game March 10 at 9 p.m. on ESPN. The Horizon League champion receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, where League teams have advanced to the Regional semifinals three times in the past six seasons.

Comprised of 10 public and private institutions of higher learning, the Horizon League is an NCAA Division I athletics conference that sponsors 19 intercollegiate championships and is headquartered in Indianapolis.
