Try as they might, it was a rare collective off night for Horizon League men's basketball teams, as all five teams in action on Wednesday lost.

I never watched Dick Vitale coach a game of basketball; instead I grew up in the Dick Vitale Era of college basketball, when “Dickie V” brought the game to life on a regular basis throughout the winter. Even meeting Vitale at his beloved Broken Egg in Siesta Key 10 years ago, his enthusiasm was palpable, despite basketball season being four months away.

That enthusiasm comes from one source:

Love.

And on Monday night in Detroit, the love went both ways between Vitale and his former school.

Youngstown State's Brooks Nabs Men's Basketball Player of the Week Honors

INDIANAPOLIS -- Shooting 64 percent from three-point range, Youngstown State senior forward DuShawn Brooks (Chicago, Ill./Thornton) has been named the Horizon League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, for the week of Nov. 29-Dec. 4. The accolade is the first of Brooks’s career. Brooks is the first player from Youngstown State to collect the honors since Jan. 11, 2010.

Hagen Repeats as MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Milwaukee senior forward Sarah Hagen (Appleton, Wis./North) has been chosen as a semifinalist for the Missouri Athletic Club's (MAC) Hermann Trophy, given to the nation's top male and female soccer players. Hagen is one of four women to repeat as a semifinalist for the award.

Nail-Biters Define Saturday in Men's Basketball

Through the first nine games of Horizon League men's basketball play, five games have come down to the final possession, with two going to overtime. Three of those came on Saturday, with two contests heading to overtime. In the end, Milwaukee, Cleveland State and Green Bay improved to 2-0 in conference play, with Valparaiso and Wright State collecting their first wins of the League season.
