ROCHESTER, MICH. - Host school Oakland swept the 2017 Horizon League Cross Country Championships on Saturday, winning both the men’s and women’s team titles. Oakland’s Maggie Schneider and Northern Kentucky’s Andrew Schille earned the individual titles as well as Athlete of the Year honors at the championship meet.
In the men’s race, the Golden Grizzlies (33 points) bested runner-up IUPUI (57 points) to bring the traveling trophy back to Oakland for the second time in three years. Bryce Stroede, Jacob Bowman, and Andrew Bowman led the Golden Grizzlies finishing second, third, and fourth respectively. League newcomer IUPUI was paced by Freshman of the Year David Ehlers’ sixth place finish and a seventh place from Jacob Stamm.
Individually, Andrew Schille of Northern Kentucky picked up the individual win and title of the Men’s Athlete of the Year, taking the top spot with a time of 24:57.2. Stroede, Jacob Bowman, Andrew Bowman, Michael Mangus of Northern Kentucky, Ehlers, and Stamm joined Schille on the First Team.
On the women’s side, Oakland (29 points) won its third straight title, ahead of runner-up IUPUI (96 points). Maggie Schneider led the Golden Grizzlies, picking up Athlete of the Year honors and the individual crown in 21:53.2. Teammates Rachel Levy and Ashley Burr finished second and third, increasing the lead for Oakland. IUPUI’s Katelyn Murphy finished fourth, Allison Hansen of UIC was fifth, Milwaukee’s Mikayla Fox took sixth, and Freshman of the Year Anna Brandt of Cleveland State rounded out the first team.
