Tyree Appleby was tabbed Freshman of the Week for a second-straight week following a career day on Wednesday that earned him his first-ever collegiate start on Sunday.

Hayes, a six-foot-seven forward, tallied 21 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists in the Golden Grizzlies’ narrow, 95-89 loss at Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, marking his fourth-consecutive double-double. He extended his streak to five games three days later by tallying 30 points and 10 boards in an 82-50 rout of Chicago State. In Saturday’s contest, Hayes shot a career-best 12-of-14 from the field, joining teammate Martez Walker as one of just five Horizon League players to net 12 field goals in a game this season. Hayes ranks sixth in the nation with five double-doubles on the year.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

Appleby averaged stellar marks of 18 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals, and three assists in Cleveland State’s two games last week, scoring a career-high 24 points in a 78-67 setback at Western Michigan on Wednesday. He misfired on only two shot attempts in the contest and connected on four of his five 3-point attempts. Head Coach Dennis Felton gave Appleby his first starting nod on Sunday and the six-foot-one freshman responded with another balanced outing, tallying 10 points, four rebounds, four steals, three assists, and three blocks in an 89-56 blowout of Notre Dame (Ohio). He shot 4-of-5 from the field in the game, raising his season field goal percentage to .542, which ranks seventh among Horizon League players. Both his shooting percentage and points per game mark (11.7) rank second among Horizon League freshmen.
