Lance Rinker
(Dec. 29, 2017) — Cleveland State and Youngstown State suffered road setbacks to Big Ten opponents on Friday night, with CSU falling to No. 2 Michigan State, 111-61, and YSU falling to Indiana, 79-51.
Senior Bobby Word scored a career-high 26 points for Cleveland State, connecting on nine of 17 shot attempts, including seven of 13 attempts from 3-point range; however, six Michigan State players scored in double figures to lead the Spartans to their 12th-consecutive victory. The Spartans’ Joshua Langford and Nick Ward scored 23 and 22 points, respectively, as Michigan State improved to 8-0 at home. The second-ranked Spartans entered the night boasting the nation’s top field goal percentage defense (33.4 percent) and — true to form — held Cleveland State to 32.8 percent shooting.
In the night’s finale, Indiana used a hot-shooting second half to down visiting Youngstown State. The Penguins trailed by just nine at intermission, 29-20, but were outscored, 50-31, after halftime. The two teams shot a combined 7-of-47 from 3-point range, with Youngstown State accounting for 23 of those misses (2-of-25). Senior Jaylen Benton came off the bench to hit both of the Penguins’ triples (2-5 3FG) and match Naz Bohannon with a team-best 10 points. YSU’s leading scorers — Braun Hartfield and Cameron Morse — entered the night accounting for 37 percent of the Penguins’ scoring load, but shot a combined 3-of-24 in the loss, including a frigid 0-of-12 mark from beyond the arc. The pair totaled just six points. Indiana’s Juwan Morgan led the Hoosiers with a game-high 16 points.
