Nike #HLMBB Players of the Week (November 19)
INDIANAPOLIS – Green Bay junior JayQuan McCloud and Northern Kentucky senior forward Drew McDonald each earned MVP honors in their respective tournaments to be named Nike® #HLMBB Co-Player of the Week, while Wright State’s Skyelar Potter nearly averaged a double-double to earn Nike® #HLMBB Freshman of the Week as the Horizon League announced its men’s basketball weekly honors on Monday.
Co-Player of the Week
JayQuan McCloud | Green Bay | RS-Junior | North Chicago, Ill. | Guard
McCloud averaged 22.0 points per game and was named the 2K Empire Classic Subregional Tournament MVP, leading his team in scoring en route to Green Bay’s Subregional Championship at Eastern Washington. McCloud went 9-for-12 from 3-point range in the two games, and bested his Friday night career-high of 21 points against Eastern Washington with a new career-high 23 points the following day in the championship game against Morehead State. The North Chicago native and GB newcomer was 15-for-21 (71.4 percent) from the floor in the two wins, and also went 5-for-6 at the free throw line. McCloud did all his damage off the bench finishing top-5 in the League in points scored, field goal percentage, 3-point field goals made and 3-point field goal percentage for the week.
Co-Player of the Week
Drew McDonald | Northern Kentucky | Senior | Cold Spring, Ky. | Forward
McDonald was named MVP and an all-tournament team member of the KEMI Northern Kentucky Basketball Classic after leading NKU to a 3-0 record en route to the team title, averaging 21.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. McDonald picked up his 36th and 37th career double-doubles with 14 points and 14 rebounds in the tournament opener for the Norse against UNC Asheville and closed out the event with an incredible 31-point, 12-rebound effort against Coastal Carolina to claim the title. In Saturday night’s game against Manhattan, McDonald poured in 19 points and corralled eight boards. McDonald also moved from 11th to eighth in NKU’s all-time scoring list with 1,547 points and to second all-time in rebounds with 823. The senior led all HL players in rebounding for the week and also finished fifth in points.
Freshman of the Week
Skyelar Potter | Wright State | Freshman | Bowling Green, Ky. | Guard
Potter came just two rebounds shy of averaging a double-double for the week as he scored 13.0 points and grabbed 9.0 rebounds per game as the Raiders earned wins over Toledo and North Florida at home. The freshman started the week against Toledo with 13 points and 11 rebounds and added 13 points and seven rebounds against North Florida in just 50 minutes overall off the bench. Potter finished fifth in rebounding and top-20 in scoring for the week.
