INDIANAPOLIS – Week two of the #HLMBB season is complete and Northern Kentucky remains undefeated, while IUPUI picked up a win over Boston College on the road and head coach Mike Davis registered his first win with the Titans.
#HLMBB NEWS & NOTES
• Northern Kentucky improved to 6-0 on the season after winning all three games of the KEMI Northern Kentucky Basketball Classic for the team title over UNC Asheville, Manhattan and Coastal Carolina. It is the best start for the Norse since starting 13-0 in 2011-12 during their final year of Division II play.
• The Norse made their way into the mid-major top-25 poll for the first time this season as NKU comes in at No. 24. Wright State is also receiving votes.
• Green Bay captured the 2K Empire Classic Subregional title over the weekend with wins over host Eastern Washington and Morehead State. JayQuan McCloud was named the MVP averaging 22 points, while ShanQuan Hemphill was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
• IUPUI registered one of the biggest wins of the season as it knocked off Boston College on the road, 76-69, led Camron Justice’s 29 points. It was a nice birthday present for head coach Jason Gardner as he celebrated his 38th birthday with his 50th career victory. The win was IUPUI's second-ever over an ACC opponent and the first since 2001. It was the Jaguars' first victory over a power conference foe since defeating Seton Hall in 2008.
• Detroit Mercy head coach Mike Davis collected his first win with the Titans as they tied a school record with 17 3-pointers in the home opener against Loyola (MD). Davis’ son Antoine scored a freshman record 42 points and tied a school record with 10 3-pointers as he finished 14-for-21 from the field and 10-of-14 from long range. Davis leads all freshman in the NCAA in scoring at 31.0 points per game, good for second in the country.
• #HLMBB have been prolific from long range early this season as seven teams are averaging nine or more treys per game and rank in the top-100 in 3-pointers made per game with UIC ranking 19th with 11.0 and Detroit Mercy at 29th at 10.8.
• UIC’s Tarkus Ferguson has been on top of his game for the Flames this season as he ranks top-100 in the NCAA in 3-point field goals made (8th, 20), minutes per game (37:40, 10th), total assists (29, 19th), double-doubles (2, 23rd), assists per game (5.8, 41st) and points per game (19.8, 78th). He is also the only HL player to have recorded double-digit assists in a game this season recording 11 at Duquesne and then 10 against Bradley.
