Campbell becomes eighth All-American in UIC Baseball history

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. –
UIC starting pitcher Ryan Campbell continued to pile up postseason accolades this week when he was named to the 21st annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-America Third Team.

Campbell is the eighth player in UIC program history to earn All-America recognition from various organizations. He joins a group that includes Rob Calabrese (2017), Alex Padilla (2017), Jeff Boehm (2015), David Cales (2007), Zach Peterson (2007), Chuck Peters (2003) and Curtis Granderson (2002).

On Wednesday, June 13, Campbell was named to the 2018 Mideast American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Region First Team. He is the fourth member of the Flames to earn First Team honors in the last two seasons. The ABCA will announce its All-America team, for which Campbell is eligible, on Saturday, June 16.

Also this spring, Campbell was voted as the Horizon League Pitcher of the Year and to the conference's First Team. He earned a spot on the Horizon League Championship All-Tournament Team after a dominant outing in UIC's first game and he picked up a pair of Horizon League Pitcher of the Week awards in 2018, as well.

Campbell capped a sensational senior season by earning eight wins in a team-high 13 starts and throwing five complete games, fourth most in the NCAA. Three of Campbell's five complete games were shutouts, including two against Milwaukee (April 28 and May 24).

The Carmel, Ind., native posted a 1.53 earned-run average in 94.0 innings pitched as a senior, a number that ranks him fourth in the country through June 11. It is also the seventh-best single-season mark in program history.

Campbell saved arguably his best performance for his last. In the first game of the Horizon League Championship last month, Campbell carried the Flames and went the distance and allowed just two hits in a 6-0 victory against Milwaukee on May 24. He fanned five, did not walk a Panther and retired 23 consecutive hitters from the second inning on to conclude the victory. He was named to the Horizon League Championship All-Tournament Team.

For his two-year career at UIC, Campbell turned in a 1.83 ERA in 118.0 IP, which is the best overall average in program history (minimum 100 IP). As a staff, the Flames have earned the top two ERAs in program history over the last two seasons with the right-handed Campbell in the mix. The 2017 staff ranked second nationally with a 2.65 ERA. UIC ranks third in 2018 with a 2.98 ERA.

On June 5 Campbell joined the professional ranks when he was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the fifth round of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The Reds took him with the draft's 139th selection, making him UIC's highest-drafted player since the Detroit Tigers grabbed Granderson with the 80th overall pick in 2002.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport. The organization completed two rounds of voting to select the All-America teams. For more information about the NCBWA, visit the association's official Web site, www.ncbwa.com.
