CHICAGO – Wright State won the 2019 Horizon League Men’s Soccer Championship on Saturday at Flames Field in penalty kicks for its first tournament title in program history. After 110 minutes of action, the match was tied at 1-1 and the Raiders prevailed in PKs, 4-3.

Penalty kicks began with the Panthers grabbing a 2-1 advantage as goalkeeper Freddy Lorenzen made a stop on WSU’s first attempt. Not to be outdone, Joel Sundell, the tournament’s most valuable player, would then make back-to-back stops to give WSU the advantage. That setup Jackson Dietrich who buried Wright State’s fifth PK attempt into the upper 90 to give the Raiders the championship.

WSU jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the 28th minute as Deri Corfe found some space just outside the box and fired a low shot to the far left post that got past the outstretched keeper. MKE found the equalizer early in the second half as Paolo Gratton collected a loose ball inside the penalty area off a free kick and finished top shelf in the 55th minute.

Wright State earns the Horizon League’s automatic qualifier and will make its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
