INDIANAPOLIS – There are only two weeks remaining in the #HLMBB schedule and the race for the regular-season title is heating up with Northern Kentucky and Wright State tied at the top, followed by UIC and Green Bay just two games back and facing each other Friday on ESPNU.
#HLMBB NEWS & NOTES
• It’s a battle for the No. 3 spot in the #HLMBB standings on Friday night as UIC hosts Green Bay on ESPNU starting at 9 p.m. ET. Both teams come into the game with identical 8-6 records and will look for the edge with two weeks remaining in the schedule. Green Bay won the first game at home, 90-85, on Jan. 19 and is the top scoring offense during HL play at 81.4 points per game. UIC has won four of its last five games and is holding League opponents to under 40 percent shooting from the floor, the best in the HL.
• Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis holds the Horizon League freshman scoring record, previously set by UIC’s Dikembe Dixson (2015-16), with 689 points this season. He also became the fastest freshman in NCAA history to reach 100 3-pointers, doing so in just 22 games, and is still working to break Stephen Curry’s NCAA freshman record of 122 3-pointers in 2006-07. Davis is second in the nation in both total 3-pointers made (118) and points per game (26.5).
• McDonald has also been selected to the Naismith Hall of Fame’s Karl Malone Award Watch List, presented to the nation’s top power-forward and one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award. He has moved into 15th place all-time in Horizon League scoring with 1,949. McDonald is one of only nine active players to record 1,900 points and 1,000 rebounds and among active Division I players ranks seventh in double-doubles.
• Wright State pulled into a tie for first place after a thrilling 81-77 victory over rival-Northern Kentucky on Friday. Wright State trailed at halftime by five points, but outscored NKU 37-28 in the second half to move to 12-2 at home. Bill Wampler had one of his best games in a WSU uniform as he finished with 29 points on 10-of-14 shooting with four 3-pointers. Loudon Love also had a big game for the Raiders as he registered a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
• Since beginning the second half of the HL season, Youngstown State has not lost a game and is riding a six-game winning streak. Darius Quisenberry has won three-straight Freshman of the Week honors for the Penguins and capped last week off with a 37-point performance. His 37 points were the most by a freshman in YSU’s Division I era (since 1981-82) and the most by a freshman since Jeff Covington scored 44 in 1975.
• Green Bay’s Sandy Cohen III and UIC’s Tarkus Ferguson are the only players in the Horizon League that rank inside the top-15 in points and top-10 in rebounds and assists. Ferguson is second in the League in assists at 5.1, while Cohen is tied for the HL lead in steals with 1.9.
• Detroit Mercy’s Davis, Wright State’s Loudon Love and Northern Kentucky’s Drew McDonald were selected to the 2018-19 Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List, presented annually to the nation’s top mid-major player in Division I College Basketball.
