Nike #HLWBB Players of the Week (March 4)

INDIANAPOLIS – Youngstown State’s Alison Smolinski totaled 19 points in the Penguins’ win at Cleveland State, helping YSU to secure the #MotorCityMadness No. 3 seed. Smolinski is the #HLWBB Nike® Player of the Week for the second time this season. Northern Kentucky freshman Ally Niece assisted the Norse to another 2-0 week, posting 19.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.0 assists, as NKU locked up the No. 5 seed in the 2019 Little Caesars Horizon League Women’s Basketball Championship. Niece is the #HLWBB Nike® Freshman of the Week for the second time this season.

Alison Smolinski scored a game-high 19 points while making five 3-pointers in YSU’s 74-61 win at Cleveland State that secured the third seed for the Penguins. The senior made four 3-pointers in the first 12 minutes and had 13 points in the first quarter to help YSU build a lead that it would never lose. She increased her season 3-pointers total to 96, which is the second-most for a season in Horizon League history and just one shy of Senee Shearer’s record set in 2013-14.

Ally Niece posted a tremendous stat line over the final weekend of the regular season, leading the Norse with 19.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game as the Norse claimed a pair of road wins. The rookie point guard shot .500 from the field and .462 from 3-point range, and was also staunch on the defensive end with four steals. She started her weekend off with 16 points, seven rebounds and seven assists at Oakland and finished with a career-high 22 points, career-best eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals at Detroit Mercy. Niece also drained a career-high four 3-pointers in the win over the Titans.
