INDIANAPOLIS – As we enter Week 4 of the #HLMBB season, Wright State is on top of the standings at 5-1, followed by Youngstown State with a 4-1 mark after two last-second victories last week, as both teams prepare to face each other this weekend.
#HLMBB NEWS & NOTES
• Wright State is No. 15 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 poll with Northern Kentucky and Youngstown State both receiving votes.
• The Raiders are 5-1 to start #HLMBB play and have been dominant so far this season. In HL play they rank tops in scoring, rebounding and 3-point field goal percentage. Nationally, WSU is 15th in the country in scoring offense with 81.3 points per game and 12th in rebounds per game at 41.5
• The HL had three players tabbed on the Lou Henson Award Midseason Watch List as Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis, Loudon Love of Wright State and Northern Kentucky’s Dantez Walton were tabbed on the list. The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the nation’s top Division I mid-major player.
• Preseason Player of the Year Antoine Davis of Detroit Mercy continues to lead the HL in scoring and ranks third in the NCAA as he is averaging 23.7 points per game. In addition, he is top 50 in the country in free throw percentage (91.9) and 3-pointers per game (3.29).
• The Norse are riding a three-game winning streak and boast the best scoring defense in the HL at 65.2 points per game as they rank 11th in the NCAA in 3-point field goal percentage defense, allowing teams to shoot just 27.0 percent from deep. Tyler Sharpe recorded his fourth 30-point performance of the season on Sunday and is now tied for the League lead.
• The Penguins are off to one of their best starts in Horizon League play as it is just the second time overall and first time since 2011-12 that YSU started Horizon League play 4-1. YSU is getting it done at home as they are 8-0 at the Beeghly Center for the first time in its Division I era.
• Youngstown State continues to hit the offensive glass as the Penguins are 18th in the NCAA in offensive rebounds per game with 13.3 and 52nd in total rebounds per game at 39.4. Naz Bohannon is leading the charge on the glass grabbing 3.9 offensive boards per game, ninth in the NCAA.
• Tarkus Ferguson continues to do a little bit of everything for UIC leading the team in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals. He leads the HL with 4.8 assists per game. The Flames knocked off Wright State on Sunday to give the Raiders their first loss during Horizon League play.
• IUPUI’s Marcus Burk and Jaylen Minnett are tied as the leading scorers during #HLMBB play as they are both averaging 19.8 points per game, while Elyjah Goss is the top rebounder with 14.5 boards per HL contest.
• Oakland has one of the best rebounding front courts in the HL as they are the only team to have three players ranked in the top-10 in rebounding. Xavier Hill-Mais is third with 7.4, followed by Daniel Oladapo with 5.9 and Brad Brechting with 5.7.
• Despite having its three-game win streak snapped on Saturday, Cleveland State still off to its best start in Horizon League play since 2014-15 at 3-2. The Vikings are tops during League play in field goal percentage and steals, and also second in turnover margin.
• Milwaukee won its third-straight HL game on Saturday against Green Bay, its first three-game win streak since 2017-18, to snap a two-game losing streak to its in-state rival. Te’Jon Lucas is third during HL play with 19.2 points per game and is also the League leader in steals, fourth in field-goal percentage and eighth in assists.
• Amari Davis of Green Bay is a five-time winner of the #HLMBB Freshman of the Week honor and ranks in the top 10 nationally among freshmen at 16.2 points per game and leads the HL shooting 53.3 percent from the floor.
• The Phoenix continue to be one of the best offensive teams in the country as they are 12th in the NCAA in scoring offense at 81.9 points per game, while also ranking ninth in assists per game at 17.1, 11th in assist-to-turnover ratio and shooting 37.4 percent from behind the arc to rank 32nd in the NCAA.
