Wright State Men, IUPUI Women Tabbed Unanimous 2020 #HLGolf Favorites

INDIANAPOLIS – Wright State has been unanimously voted the top team in the 2020 Horizon League Men’s Golf Preseason Poll, while IUPUI unanimously earned the top spot in the 2020 Horizon League Women’s Golf Preseason Poll, as announced by the Horizon League office on Wednesday. The poll was voted on by the League’s head coaches.

2019 champion Wright State was selected as the top team in the men’s poll, receiving all eight first-place votes, totaling 64 points. The Raiders return All-League Second Team selection Austin Schoonmaker and All-Tournament Team members Cole Corder and Bryce Haney. WSU posted the lowest scoring average among League teams in fall competition (286.13).

Oakland collected 55 total points to finish second in the poll. The Golden Grizzlies return All-League First Team honoree Chris Handy, Second Team selection Thomas Giroux and All-Tournament Team honoree Colin Sikkenga in 2020.

Northern Kentucky was voted third in the men’s poll, earning 39 points. The Norse placed second at last year’s championship and were led by Alex Doss (73.61 average score) this fall. Youngstown State was chosen fourth in the poll (37 points) and brings back Kevin Scherr from the 2019 All-League First Team.

Cleveland State earned the fifth spot in the poll (36 points) as the Raiders bring back Zach Robbins from the All-League Second Team. Green Bay finished sixth (22 points), as the Phoenix return Championship Medalist George Kneiser. IUPUI (18 points) and Detroit Mercy (17 points) closed out the poll in seventh and eighth, respectively.

On the women’s side, IUPUI received all eight first-place votes and collected 64 total points to earn the title of unanimous preseason favorite. The Jaguars have won back-to-back championships and return 2019 Golfer of the Year Marion Debove, Second Team selection Amelie Svedja and All-Tournament Team member Kara Blair in 2020. IUPUI led the League with an average score of 300.42 this fall.
 
Youngstown earned a second-place finish in the preseason poll, totaling 52 points. The Penguins return All-League First Team selection and Freshman of the Year Puthita Khuanrudee, as well as All-League Second Team honoree Victoria Grans from last year’s lineup.
 
Green Bay finished third in the women’s poll, collecting 47 points. The Phoenix were led by Lori Meyer this fall, as she posted a scoring average of 78.09. Oakland (42 points) is fourth in the poll and was paced by freshman Kay Zubkus in the fall season as she averaged 76.54 per round.
 
Cleveland State was voted fifth in the preseason poll (35 points) ahead of sixth-place team UIC (21 points). Northern Kentucky (16 points) was chosen seventh and Detroit Mercy (11 points) rounded out the poll in eighth.
