INDIANAPOLIS – With just two weeks remaining in the #HLMBB schedule, Wright State clinched a spot to Indianapolis and a bye to the semifinals of the Horizon League Basketball Championships and hold a two-game lead in the race for the regular-season title. Northern Kentucky sits at No. 2 in the standings, followed by Youngstown State and Green Bay tied for third.
#HLMBB NEWS & NOTES
• Wright State continues to receive votes in The Associated Press college basketball poll for the second-straight week. With 23 wins this season, the Raiders are tied for the sixth-most wins in the country.
• WSU comes in at No. 12 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 poll with Northern Kentucky receiving votes.
• The Raiders are 13-2 to in #HLMBB play and have been dominant so far this season. In HL play, they rank tops in scoring, rebounding, field-goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage. Nationally, WSU is fourth in the country in scoring offense with 82.5 points per game and seventh in rebounds per game at 40.9.
• Wright State can clinch the regular season title and the No. 1 seed with a sweep this weekend in Northeast Ohio. Northern Kentucky can secure the other bye into the semifinals of the Horizon League Basketball Championships with a 2-0 week.
• The Norse boast the best scoring defense in the HL at 66.2 points per game as they rank 34th in the NCAA in 3-point field goal percentage defense, allowing teams to shoot just 29.7 percent from deep.
• Amari Davis of Green Bay set the record for most #HLMBB Freshman of the Week honors in a season with his ninth. Davis ranks eighth during League play with 16.6 points per game and is fourth in shooting percentage at 47.9 percent from the floor.
• Green Bay and Youngstown State are tied at 8-6 in the HL standings and are tied for third place. The Phoenix are sixth in the country in scoring offense at 81.4 points per game, while the Penguins are fifth in the NCAA in offensive rebounds per game with 14.04 and 18th in total rebounds per game at 40.00.
• Preseason Player of the Year Antoine Davis of Detroit Mercy continues to lead the HL in scoring and ranks sixth in the NCAA as he is averaging 23.2 points per game. In addition, he is 11th in the country in free throw percentage (90.7) and top-10 in the country in 3-pointers per game (3.35).
• UIC has won four of its last six games to be 8-7 in League play as it begins a three-game homestand. Tarkus Ferguson continues to do a little bit of everything for the Flames leading the team in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals. He is second the HL with 4.8 assists per game.
• Milwaukee enters the second-to-last weekend of the HL season at 7-7 and in line to host a first round game in the Horizon League Basketball Championships. Te’Jon Lucas ranks sixth during Horizon League play in scoring, averaging 17.2 points per game and tied for first in assists at 5.1.
• IUPUI’s Elyjah Goss leads the League in rebounding, averaging 11.5 a game, which ranks sixth in the NCAA and is tied for the League-lead in double-doubles with 10. Marcus Burk (23.1) is the top scorer during #HLMBB play and Jaylen Minnett (19.1) is the third-leading scorer.
• Oakland won consecutive games for the first time since Nov. 9 and 10 as Xavier Hill-Mais won his first Player of the Week honor. Hill-Mais is one of two players to rank top-10 in scoring (16.4) and rebounds (7.9) during Horizon League play and is third in field-goal percentage of 50.5 percent.
• Cleveland State is tops during HL play in steals with 7.6 per game with Craig Beaudion leading the way with 2.2 takeaways.
