Youngstown State Wins a Pair of #HLTF Indoor Titles
Day Two Results
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The 2020 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded Sunday with Youngstown State winning with 214 on the men’s side and 183 for the women’s competition. This marks the fifth consecutive men’s title and the fourth consecutive women’s title for the Penguins. This ties for a League record of most consecutive wins on the women’s side.
Alfreeda Goff Indoor Track & Field Male Athlete of the Year and #HLTF Men’s Championship Outstanding Performer in Fielding, Zach Stadnika of Oakland, defended his title in the Heptathlon for the third year in a row by setting a League record score of 5,387 points.
Jaliyah Elliott, the Alfreeda Goff Indoor Track & Field Female Co-Athlete of the Year, set a new League record in the women’s 200 meter dash of 23.66. Suerethia Henderson (24.39) was runner-up, followed by Jahniya Bowers (24.68) and Kyndia Matlock (24.79) in third and fourth. Elliott went on to be the top finisher of the women’s 60 meter in a time of 7.4 seconds.
Milwaukee took the top two spots in the women’s high jump with Alfreeda Goff Indoor Track & Field Female Co-Athlete of the Year, Ashley Melvin, taking the crown at 1.73m. Annie Guerrero picked up second for the Panthers with a jump of 1.70m.
The #HLTF Women’s Championship Outstanding Performer in Fielding, Milwaukee’s Kyra Arendt, took the women’s triple jump title with a leap of 12.31m. Her teammate, Chieme Udaku, took third with an 11.51m for the Panthers.
The #HLTF Men’s Championship Outstanding Performer in Running, Eric Hoffman of IUPUI, was the champion of the men’s 3,000 meter after crossing the line in 8:32.97. Detroit Mercy’s James McCann was runner-up after finishing in 8:34.01. IUPUI snagged the next three spots with Brennan Butche (8:35.49), Ben Savage (8:35.64) and sophomore Austin Ohm (8:38.29).
Alivia Bentley of Youngstown State earned the women’s shot put title with a toss of 13.97m and was named #HLTF Women’s Freshman of the Year in Fielding.
The #HLTF Women’s Championship Outstanding Performer in Running, IUPUI’s Katelyn Murphy (5:06.07), narrowly edged out Youngstown State’s Nicole Squatrito (5:06.10) to claim her second championship title of the weekend.
Sean Peterson of Youngstown State was the men’s one mile champion with a 4:14.55 finish. Ethan Sparks (4:17.76) was the third-place finisher for the Penguins. Peterson went on to win the 800 meter as well, crossing the line in 1:53.30. Freshman Dakari Carter picked up two event wins for the Penguins, winning the 60 meter in 6.9 seconds and the 200 meter in 21.60. The men’s shot put title was claimed by Brandon Orlando of Youngstown State (16.89m) while his teammate Dom Westbay (16.59m) took runner up. Freshman Jakari Lomax of Youngstown State took the men’s triple jump title with a 14.88m. Collin Harden of Youngstown State took the men's 60 meter hurdles title in 7.95.
Oakland senior Chanel Gardner finished in 55.56 to take the women's 400m dash title for the third consecutive year in a row while Jimmie Williams had his second consecutive title in the men's 400 meter dash with a finish of 47.31. Oakland sophomore Megan Nichols ran 9:51.64 to be named the women’s 3,000 meter champion. Milwaukee’s Mikayla Fox was runner-up with a 9:52.54 and was followed by Maggie Schneider (9:54.98) for the Golden Grizzlies.
In events for the Golden Grizzlies, Alex Hugh-Plott was the men’s high jump champion after clearing a height of 2.07m. Detroit Mercy’s Daniel Lanfear (2.04m) took second and Youngstown State’s Lonnie Harper (2.04m) was third.
Detroit Mercy’s Kyri Jackson was the women's 60 meter hurdles champion with an 8.61 second finish.
UIC’s Kayla Isom took the women’s 800 meter crown, finishing in a time of 2:14.38. Nicole Squatrito was the runner-up (2:14.93) for the Penguins while Anna Brandt of Cleveland State (2:15.41) took the third podium spot.
Oakland was the women’s 4x400 relay champion with a finish of 3:50.49. Cleveland State (3:52.36) was the runner-up while Northern Kentucky took third with a finish of 3:52.
Oakland picked up the men’s 4x400 relay title as well, finishing in a swift 3:16.92. UIC finished second (3:20.59) and Detroit Mercy (3:20.59) finished third.
