INDIANAPOLIS – Week 7 of the #HLMBB begins this weekend and it marks the final #FRIDAYisHLMBB matchup for the month of January as RMU hits the road to Wright State at 9 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
HLMBB NEWS & NOTES
• Wright State, No. 17 in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll, may have one of the most balanced teams in the country. Offensively, the Raiders are 25th in the country in scoring (81.7) and 28th in country in shooting percentage (49.0). Defensively, WSU ranks 10th in the country in defensive field-goal percentage (38.1) and third in rebounding (43.3) including be the No. 1 team in the country in defensive rebounding (31.6).
• RMU’s AJ Bramah will be showcased on ESPNU on Friday as he comes into the weekend as the scoring leader during HL play averaging 22.7 points with 20-point performances in five of seven #HLMBB games. The senior is also the League’s leading rebounder during League action at 10.9 boards per game after grabbing 10 or more rebounds in three of his last four games.
• A pair of Horizon League standouts were selected to the Lou Henson Award Midseason Watch List this week with Wright State’s Loudon Love and Oakland’s Jalen Moore making the list. The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in the country.
• The Horizon League has some of the top passers in the NCAA as three HL players rank in the top-30 in assists led by Oakland’s Moore who is leading the nation at 8.1 per game, followed by UIC’s Teyvion Kirk ranking eighth with 6.9 and Te’Jon Lucas of Milwaukee coming in 26th with 5.6.
• #HLMBB boasts four of the top rebounders in the country as they all rank top-25 nationally led by WSU’s Love who is tops in the HL and 15th in the NCAA with 10.4 boards per game. IUPUI’s Elyjah Goss comes in at No. 21 nationally with 9.8 boards and RMU’s Bramah and Northern Kentucky’s Adrian Nelson are each tallying 9.7 per contest.
• Cleveland State is 10-2 to start the Horizon League season bolstered on the defensive end as the Vikings rank top-2 in scoring defense (66.1 points), defensive field-goal percentage (38.9 percent), defensive 3-point field-goal percentage (28.2) and steals (8.8 steals) during HL play. CSU is coming off its second-straight week with a win on national television as it defeated Milwaukee 64-53 on ESPN2.
• Purdue Fort Wayne continues to be one of the best shooting teams in the country. Nationally, the Mastodons are 13th in field-goal percentage at 50.8 percent, including ranking fifth in 3-point shooting team at 41.4 percent from long range. Jarred Godfrey is leading the charge as he is averaging 18.8 points per game in the Horizon League and tied for the most 20-point games with six.
• Green Bay and Northern Kentucky each earned series sweeps over the weekend after suffering the opposite fate the weekend prior. Defensively, the Phoenix held the Mastodons to below 30 percent shooting from long range in both games and offensively they led by their bench as Josh Jefferson and Emmanuel Ansong combined to average 30 points per game. NKU had a pair of hard fought wins on the road including an overtime victory to get back to .500 in HL play as talented freshman Marques Warrick averaged 18.5 points and Trevon Faulkner added a pair of 18-point games.
• Milwaukee handed CSU just its second loss during #HLMBB play in very dramatic fashion. The Panthers trailed by 14 with under three minutes to play before scoring 21 of the final 28 points in regulation to force overtime. In the extra period, DeAndre Gholston scored the game-winner with just 3.2 seconds remaining off an offensive rebound to collect the victory.
• Detroit Mercy has won three out of its last four games and snapped a 10-game losing skid against its Metro Series rival on the road. Antoine Davis has fueled the Titans over the last two weeks as the junior is averaging 28.3 points for the four-game stretch and is shooting 54.9 percent from the floor including 54.5 percent from long range to go along with 6.0 assists.
• Oakland’s Jalen Moore is making his mark on the Horizon League in his first season. The JUCO transfer is leading the nation in assists while averaging 18.8 points per game and has collected seven doubles-doubles, good for eighth in the NCAA. Moore also posted the second triple-double by a HL player this season with 18 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds. It marks just the third triple-double in program history and the first since former #HLMBB Player of the Year Kay Felder in 2016.
