INDIANAPOLIS – The first full week of the college basketball season is in the books with Oakland picking up a big road win against a Big 12 opponent and Purdue Fort Wayne remaining unbeaten to start the season. In addition, Milwaukee, UIC and Youngstown State each earned victories on the road during the first week of action.
#HLMBB NEWS & NOTES
• Oakland earned a win on the road at Oklahoma State on Friday, 56-55. It marked the first win for the Golden Grizzlies over a Power 5 opponent since 2017 when they defeated Clemson in the NIT. Oakland’s defense has led the charge this season as the Golden Grizzlies have allowed just 57.5 points per game, hold a +9.5 rebounding margin and held West Virginia and Oklahoma State to a combined shooting percentage of just 18.4 from 3-point range. Through two games this season against Big 12 opponents, Jamal Cain is averaging 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, while Preseason All-League selection Jalen Moore dropped 16 points and six assists in the upset of the Cowboys.
• Three #HLMBB teams are ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll with Oakland leading the way at No. 25. Wright State and Cleveland State each received votes in the poll.
• A total of four Horizon League men’s basketball players were tabbed to the Lou Henson Award Watch List. The award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in division I college basketball. The list included Milwaukee’s Patrick Baldwin Jr., Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis, Wright State’s Tanner Holden and Oakland’s Jalen Moore.
• Milwaukee’s Baldwin shined in the first two games of his collegiate career as he is averaging 20.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. The freshman is just one of 36 players in the country to have posted multiple double-doubles already this season. In addition to being named to the Lou Henson Award Watch List, Baldwin was named to the 2022 Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy Watch List and national watch lists for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award and the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award. The Preseason All-Horizon League First Team selection is the highest-ranked high school recruit to ever sign with a Horizon League program, was a consensus five-star recruit and was considered the No. 4 player nationally in the class of 2021.
• Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis currently ranks eighth on the Horizon League’s all-time scoring list with 2,077 points. The senior earned his second Preseason Player of the Year honor of his career and has led the Horizon League in scoring in all three seasons at Detroit Mercy. He finished last season with 24.0 points, good for third in the country, while also ranking top-5 in 3-pointers per game.
• Cleveland State was voted as the preseason favorites this season for the first time since 2009 after winning the Horizon League Men’s Basketball Championship last season. The Vikings are also coming off a season where they earned a share of its first #HLMBB regular season title since the 2010-11 campaign and the No. 1 seed for the championship for the first time in program history.
• Purdue Fort Wayne continues its hot shooting from a year ago as they are shooting 53.2 percent from the floor and 48.7 percent from 3-point range through two games as both are ranked top-20 in the country. Last season, the Mastodons were the only team in the country to shoot over 50 percent from the floor and 40 percent from 3-point range. Jalon Pipkins leads the way for the ‘Dons averaging 14.5 points per game, while shooting almost 70 percent from the floor, including over 85 percent from distance.
• Wright State’s Grant Basile came out on fire to start the season as he dropped 37 points on the road at Marshall. The Preseason All-League First Team selection went 12-for-21 from the floor including hitting 12-of-14 shots from the free-throw line. The 37 points are tied for the second-most in a single-game this season.
• Trevon Faulkner leads the Horizon League in scoring with 22.5 points per game including a 28-point performance against UNC Greensboro in overtime. The senior is tops in the country with 5.5 3-pointers per game while shooting 50 percent from 3-point range.
• Milwaukee started off the season with a road win at North Dakota, 75-60. Baldwin led the way for the Panthers with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while DeAndre Gholston added 14 points and six boards.
• After falling just short of an upset at Dayton, UIC came back to earn its first win of the season at Valparaiso on Saturday in overtime, 74-70. Damaria Franklin led the charge for the Flames with 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Kevin Johnson fell one assist short of his own double-double with 17 points and nine assists. Through three games this season, Franklin leads the team in both points (14.3) and rebounds (7.3).
• Youngstown State claimed its first win of the season on the road with a 97-79 victory at SEMO. The ‘Guins trailed at half but then outscored its opponent 60-40 in the final 20 minutes of play. Tevin Olison posted a team-best 27 points in the win, while Garrett Covington notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
