INDIANAPOLIS – There is just one more week until the start of the #HLMBB season on Thursday, Dec. 2 and teams are looking to hit their stride heading into next week as many #HLMBB teams compete in multi-team events across the country.

#HLMBB NEWS & NOTES
• Oakland’s Jamal Cain has led the Golden Grizzlies to an impressive 3-2 start on the season with two wins over teams ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll, Vermont and Toledo, and a road victory at Oklahoma State. Cain is averaging 21.7 points and 11.5 rebounds per game and is only one of three players in the country averaging more than 21 points and 11 rebounds. The graduate student is also tied for the most double-doubles in the NCAA with four in five games.

• Wright State’s Tanner Holden leads the League with 22.0 points per game and is tied with Oakland’s Cain for the most 20-point performances this season with three. The HL is one of five conferences in the country to have multiple players ranked in the top-20 nationally in points per game.

• Through two weeks of the college basketball season, UIC’s Kevin Johnson ranks eighth nationally with 7.2 assists per game, with Oakland Jalen Moore right behind him ranking 14th in the country with 6.2.

• Three #HLMBB teams are ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll with Oakland jumping up to No. 17. Wright State and Cleveland State each received votes in the poll.

• A total of four Horizon League men’s basketball players were tabbed to the Lou Henson Award Watch List. The award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in division I college basketball. The list included Milwaukee’s Patrick Baldwin Jr., Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis, Wright State’s Tanner Holden and Oakland’s Jalen Moore.

• The Vikings registered a pair of wins in the Cerebro Sports Lake Erie Challenge with victories over Canisius and Coppin State. In the 80-70 win over Canisius, D’Moi Hodge dropped 27 points with four steals in lead CSU, while Torrey Patton led the offensive charge in a 65-62 win over Coppin State with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

• Earlier in the week, Northern Kentucky earned a thrilling comeback victory over Eastern Michigan, 74-73. The Norse erased an 11-point second point deficit and outscored the Eagles 50-38 in the final 20 minutes to claim the win. The lead changed hand 15 times and was tied eight times throughout the contest but a Bryson Langson layup with seven seconds gave NKU the win. Sam Vinson scored a team-best 17 points and Adrian Nelson totaled 16 points.

• Milwaukee’s Baldwin continues to impress during his freshman campaign as he is averaging 15.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, both ranking top-10 in the Horizon League. In addition to being named to the Lou Henson Award Watch List, Baldwin was named to the 2022 Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy Watch List and national watch lists for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award and the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award. The Preseason All-Horizon League First Team selection is the highest-ranked high school recruit to ever sign with a Horizon League program, was a consensus five-star recruit and was considered the No. 4 player nationally in the class of 2021.

• Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis currently ranks sixth on the Horizon League’s all-time scoring list with 2,120 points and is 227 points away from becoming the HL’s all-time leading scoring in League play. Davis also stands just 20 3-pointers away from hitting the most triples in HL history. The senior earned his second Preseason Player of the Year honor of his career and has led the Horizon League in scoring in all three seasons at Detroit Mercy. He finished last season with 24.0 points, good for third in the country, while also ranking top-5 in 3-pointers per game.

• Three Horizon League teams have been defending the 3-point line at an elite level as Green Bay, Oakland and Wright State are each holding their opponents to under 30 percent shooting from long range.

• Cleveland State was voted as the preseason favorites this season for the first time since 2009 after winning the Horizon League Men’s Basketball Championship last season. The Vikings are also coming off a season where they earned a share of its first #HLMBB regular season title since the 2010-11 campaign and the No. 1 seed for the championship for the first time in program history.

• Purdue Fort Wayne continues its hot shooting from a year ago as it leads the HL at 45.9 percent from the floor and second in 3-point field-goal percentage at 38.7 percent. Last season, the Mastodons were the only team in the country to shoot over 50 percent from the floor and 40 percent from 3-point range. Jalon Pipkins leads the way for the ‘Dons averaging 16.0 points per game, while shooting a League-best 58.6 percent from the floor, including over 58 percent from distance.

• Wright State’s Grant Basile came out on fire to start the season as he dropped 37 points on the road at Marshall. The Preseason All-League First Team selection went 12-for-21 from the floor including hitting 12-of-14 shots from the free-throw line. The 37 points are tied for the fourth-most in a single-game this season.
