INDIANAPOLIS – For the second week in a row, Oakland’s Jamal Cain earned Nike® #HLMBB Player of the Week and Northern Kentucky’s Sam Vinson claimed Nike® #HLMBB Freshman of the Week as the Horizon League announced its men’s basketball weekly honors on Monday. Cain earned MVP honors at the Gulf Coast Showcase averaging 23.0 points, while Vinson finished with 10.5 points and 5.0 rebounds over a two-game stretch.

Cain averaged 23.0 points on 66-percent shooting (27-of-41) along with 10.7 rebounds, and 2.3 steals to lead the Oakland men’s basketball team to a 3-0 record, a tournament title, and MVP honors at the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla. The Marquette transfer opened the showcase with team-leading marks in points (22), rebounds (16), and steals (2) to help the Golden Grizzlies to a 63-61 win over Vermont. The next day, Cain posted 19 points, seven rebounds, and two steals en route to a 76-73 victory against Rice. In OU’s 81-73 triumph versus Delaware in the tournament title game, the Pontiac, Mich., native went off for 28 points on 10-of-12 shooting and added nine rebounds and three steals. Through seven games, Cain is the only Division I player in the nation averaging over 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game.

#HLMBB Freshman of the Week
Sam Vinson | Northern Kentucky | Freshman | Guard | Fort Thomas, Ky.
Vinson continued to impact contests in all facets for Northern Kentucky, averaging 10.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game and made all nine free throws in meetings with Western Illinois and at DePaul. He opened with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, four steals and a block against the Leathernecks. Vinson then finished the week off at the Blue Demons with 10 points, four rebounds and four assists. The Fort Thomas, Ky, native is now averaging 8.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.0 blocks and 2.2 steals per game. His averages in steals, assists and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.7) rank fourth, fifth and sixth in the Horizon League, respectively.
