INDIANAPOLIS – The men’s soccer regular season wrapped on Wednesday with every game having tournament implications. Oakland earned the 2021 Horizon League regular season title, No. 1 seed in the championship and bye to the semifinal round. The Golden Grizzlies will host the semifinal and championship rounds of the 2021 #HLMSOC Championship on Thursday, November 11 and Saturday, November 13.
Oakland entered the 2021 campaign as the preseason favorite and clinched the regular season title and No. 1 seed with an overtime victory over Northern Kentucky in the regular season finale. Entering the final day of matches, Oakland was in second place behind Cleveland State and needed a victory to clinch the regular season title. The Golden Grizzlies did just that with a goal in the 102
nd minute. Oakland finished the season 8-1-1 in League play and 10-6-2 overall. They will play in the semifinals on November 11 against the lowest-remaining seed.
Cleveland State claims the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will receive a bye into the semifinal round. The Vikings finished the regular season with an 8-2 League record and an overall record of 9-7. Cleveland State will face the highest-remaining seed on November 11 at Oakland. The Vikings are back in the postseason for the first time since 2017.
The quarterfinal rounds of the 2021 #HLMSOC Championship will be hosted by No. 3 seed Milwaukee and No. 4 seed UIC on Sunday, November 7 at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT. The Panthers return to the tournament as defending champs, and finished the regular season with a League record of 6-3-1 and an overall record of 8-7-1. The Flames of UIC captured the No. 4 seed on Wednesday and will host their quarterfinal match at Flames Field.
Rounding out the top six are No. 5 seed Detroit Mercy and No. 6 seed RMU. Detroit Mercy will travel to Chicago to take on the Flames on Sunday, November 7. The Titans completed the regular season with a League record of 4-3-3 and overall record of 5-6-5. Detroit Mercy clinched their postseason berth with Wednesday’s win. RMU captured the final spot in the tournament with their regular season finale victory over IUPUI. The Colonials finished the League schedule with a record of 4-5-1. This will be the Colonials first Horizon League tournament appearance in men’s soccer.
