INDIANAPOLIS – Non-conference play continued across the Horizon League as teams continue to prepare for the return of Horizon League play on Dec. 30.
#HLMBB NEWS & NOTES
• Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis set the Horizon League record for career 3-pointers earlier this season and now has 359 triples for his career. He currently leads the Horizon League in scoring and is fourth in the country with 21.9 points per game. The two-time Preseason Player of the Year ranks sixth on the Horizon League’s all-time scoring list with 2,259 points and is 189 points away from breaking the HL’s all-time scoring record in League play of 1,481 set by Alfredrick Hughes at Loyola. The senior is the nation’s active career leader in scoring average (24.6), 3-pointers per game (3.90) and free throw percentage (89.3), while also second in total points. He is one of only 17 current players in Division I to have amassed over 1,500 points and 350 assists.
• Jamal Cain is leading the charge for the Golden Grizzlies as he is averaging 21.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game and is only one of two players in the country averaging more than 21 points and 10 rebounds. In addition, Cain also leads the Horizon League in steals with 2.3 per game and double-doubles with five.
• Two #HLMBB teams are ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll with Oakland coming in at No. 13 and Cleveland State receiving votes in the poll.
• A total of four Horizon League men’s basketball players were tabbed to the Lou Henson Award Watch List. The award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in division I college basketball. The list included Milwaukee’s Patrick Baldwin Jr., Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis, Wright State’s Tanner Holden and Oakland’s Jalen Moore.
• Milwaukee’s Baldwin continues to impress during his freshman campaign as he is averaging 15.0 points and 7.1 rebounds per game including a 26-point performance in his first Horizon League game of his career. In addition to being named to the Lou Henson Award Watch List, Baldwin was named to the 2022 Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy Watch List and national watch lists for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award and the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award. The Preseason All-Horizon League First Team selection is the highest-ranked high school recruit to ever sign with a Horizon League program, was a consensus five-star recruit and was considered the No. 4 player nationally in the class of 2021.
• Cleveland State had its six-game winning streak snapped in heartbreaking fashion as it lost in overtime at Oklahoma State on Monday, 98-93. The Vikings continue to play well defensively as they lead the HL in defensive field-goal percentage (39.9) and rank second in steals (9.56). However, don’t sleep on the CSU offense as is second in the League in scoring (74.9) with four 80-point games this season, while leading the League in field-goal percentage (47.4), assists (17.4) and scoring margin (+7.4). D’Moi Hodge leads the offensive charge for the Vikings with 14.9 points per game on 45.8 percent shooting from the floor including a 31-point effort against the Cowboys.
• Oakland has won five out of its last six games as it heads into its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, Dec. 21 when the Golden Grizzlies play host to Michigan State at Little Caesars Arena. Oakland is the top Horizon League team in the NCAA’s NET rankings, currently sitting at No. 61, after an impressive start to the season that has included a road victory at Oklahoma State and three victories over teams ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll. Oakland has been great defensively this year as they are the No. 2 scoring defense in the Horizon League thanks to holding opponents to 27.0 percent shooting from long range.
• Two #HLMBB players find themselves top-15 in the country in assists per game led by Oakland’s Jalen Moore ranking fifth with 6.9 assists per game, while UIC’s Kevin Johnson is right behind him ranking 12th in the country with 6.0.
• Youngstown State extended its winning streak to four games last week after a pair of historic wins for the ‘Guins. YSU started the week off with an 84-77 victory over Central Michigan that marked the first win over a MAC school since 2016. The ‘Guins followed that up with a 71-43 win against Canisius that was the first in the series between the two schools and the fewest points allowed by YSU in a game since 2011.
• Northern Kentucky snapped a four-game losing skid with a 75-62 win at home over Canisius. The Norse were efficient from the floor shooting over 50 percent as last year’s Freshman of the Year scored a career best 30 points on 10-of-14 shooting, while freshman breakout star Sam Vinson tallied 17 points on 70 percent shooting including three triples.
• Detroit Mercy won its home opener against its in-state rival Western Michigan, 83-64. Two Titans finished with double-doubles as Antoine Davis tallied 20 points and 10 assists for the second of his career, while Madut Akec registered 18 points and 12 boards for his fourth double-double of the season.
• UIC picked up its second non-conference road win of the season after a 71-67 win at Central Michigan. The Flames used a balanced scoring attack as Four Flames scored in double figures, led by Kevin Johnson's 14 points. Zion Griffin and Jalen Warren added 11 each while Marcus Larsson, making his second appearance of the year, chipped in 10 points off the bench.
• Purdue Fort Wayne led wire-to-wire in a 78-65 victory over SEMO as the ‘Dons shot over 55 percent from the floor. Jalon Pipkins finished with 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting, while Jarred Godfrey scored 16 in the win.
