INDIANAPOLIS – The college baseball season began last weekend with UIC’s Matt Bottcher hitting .385 with three RBIs and a triple to earn the first Nike #HLBASE Batter of the Week honor of the season. Youngstown State’s Jon Snyder is the inaugural Nike #HLBASE Pitcher of the Week of 2021 after tossing 5.0 innings against Troy surrendering one run on three hits with six strikeouts as the Horizon League announced its first baseball weekly honors of the season on Wednesday.

Bottcher finished UIC’s opening weekend with a .385 batting average, a .538 slugging percentage and a team-best three RBIs as the Flames picked up their first win of the season in the series finale against FIU. In the third game of the series, Bottcher went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, while his five total hits on the weekend were second most for the Flames. Bottcher hit his first triple of the season in the series while also drawing a pair of walks.

Jon Snyder | Youngstown State | Junior | Right-Handed Pitcher | Springboro, Ohio
Snyder allowed one run on three hits and matched his career high with six strikeouts while walking only one batter over 5.0 innings to earn the win in YSU’s 4-2 victory over Troy on Sunday in the series finale. In his first outing of the season, Snyder recorded at least one strikeout in each of the first four innings and retired at one point retired seven-straight batters.
