INDIANAPOLIS – The 2021 #HLWBB Championship began on Thursday with Cleveland State, Northern Kentucky and Youngstown State earning first round victories to continue their journeys to #REACHtheHORIZON.

No. 7 seed Youngstown State 62, No. 10 seed Purdue Fort Wayne 59
  • No. 7 seed Youngstown State held off No. 10 seed Purdue Fort Wayne to earn a 62-59 victory in the first round.
  • The Mastodons led 52-48 after the third quarter but the Penguins outscored PFW 14-7 over the final ten minutes. Purdue Fort Wayne shot just 23 percent (3-13) in the fourth.
  • YSU dominated in the paint, scoring 46 points in the lane while holding Purdue Fort Wayne to just 18.
  • The Mastodon bench was key in the upset bid, scoring 29 points.
  • YSU senior Mary Dunn posted a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds while freshman Nneka Obiazor added 20 points.
  • A trio of Mastodons, Rylie Parker, Jaida Wolfork and Riley Ott, scored in double figures, led by Parker with 18 points.
  • The Penguins advance to face No. 2 seed Milwaukee on the road on Tuesday, March 2 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
  • Purdue Fort Wayne wraps up the season at 1-22.
No. 6 seed Cleveland State 69, No. 11 seed UIC 43
  • No. 6 seed Cleveland State took down No. 11 seed UIC, 69-43, in the first round of the 2021 #HLWBB championship.
  • The Vikings jumped out to a quick 15-6 lead in the first ten minutes but the Flames responded win the second, posting a 14-11 advantage in the second quarter to trail by just six at halftime.
  • After a tight third quarter, CSU dominated in the fourth, posting 28 points and allowing just 10 points to secure the victory.
  • The Vikings forced 30 UIC turnovers in the contest, converting those into 26 points on the offensive end.
  • Mariah White led CSU with 21 points while Isabelle Gradwell and Nadia Dumas added 12 points each.
  • Keona Schenck (15 points) and Jaida McCloud (14 points) paced the Flames offensively.
  • The Vikings will travel to take on No. 3 seed Green Bay in the quarterfinals at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 2 at 8 p.m. ET.
  • UIC ends the 2020-21 campaign at 3-16.
No. 8 seed Northern Kentucky 68, No. 9 seed RMU 54
  • No. 8 seed Northern Kentucky defeated No. 9 seed RMU, 68-54, to advance to the #HLWBB quarterfinals.
  • RMU led by one point after the opening quarter but the Norse quickly responded with 21 points in the second frame to take a 31-19 halftime lead.
  • The Norse had a strong offensive performance, shooting 52.9 percent (27-51) from the floor.
  • NKU also held key advantages over the Colonials in rebounds (37-23) and points in the paint (38-24).
  • Lindsey Duvall had a stellar game for the Norse, totaling 29 points and 14 rebounds while Kailey Coffey and Ivy Turner added 10 points each.
  • Esther Castedo led RMU with 21 points in the loss.
  • NKU will head to Dayton to battle No. 1 seed Wright State in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 2 at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
  • RMU finishes the season 4-13.
