INDIANAPOLIS – Week 9 of the #HLMBB begins this weekend and it marks the final #FRIDAYisHLMBB matchup of the regular season as Cleveland State hosts Detroit Mercy on ESPNU at 9 p.m. ET. Also on Friday, the Horizon League will be celebrating John McLendon, a former Cleveland State men’s basketball coach, who was a pioneer for the game of basketball both on and off the court with Coach John McLendon Day across the HL. HLMBB NEWS & NOTES
• Cleveland State is 14-2 in the Horizon League, marking the first 14-win season for the Vikings during League play in program history and earned a spot on the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll at No. 25. CSU continues to be bolstered on the defensive end as the Vikings rank top-2 in scoring defense (67.3 points), defensive field-goal percentage (40.9 percent) and steals (8.5 steals) during HL play. Offensively, Torrey Patton leads the way with 14.1 points per game on 47.2 percent shooting from the floor.
• Detroit Mercy is one of the hottest teams in the Horizon League as the Titans are 7-1 over their last eight games. As a team, Detroit Mercy is tops in the Horizon League averaging almost 11 triples per game and top-3 in scoring offense, field-goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage. Antoine Davis leads the Titans as he is the League’s leading scorer during HL play at 23.3 points per game, hitting just over four 3-pointers per contest, and has scored over 20 points in the last eight contests. Overall he is sixth in the nation at 22.0 points per game.
• Wright State jumped up to No. 9 in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll and No. 56 in the NCAA’s NET rankings as it is riding a seven-game winning streak The Raiders are the No. 1 rebounding team in the country at 42.8 boards per game and also No. 1 in defensive rebounding at 30.9. Offensively, Wright State is 23rd in the country in scoring (81.0) and 25th in country in shooting percentage (48.6). Defensively, WSU ranks 13th in the country in defensive field-goal percentage (38.7) and first in the HL in scoring defense at 63.6.
• Northern Kentucky is right behind WSU with a six-game winning streak and is now 9-5 during Horizon League play. Over the six-game stretch, Trevon Faulkner and Marques Warrick are each averaging 17.5 points per game, while Adrian Nelson is shooting an astounding 93 percent (27-29) from the floor and grabbing 8.0 boards per game.
• Last weekend, Youngstown State’s Michael Akuchie set a Horizon League record with 24 rebounds during a HL contest, breaking the previous record of 23. It is tied for the most by a Horizon League player matching Xavier’s Derek Strong who also grabbed 24 boards vs. Loyola Marymount on Jan. 2, 1990. The Penguins also welcomed back Darius Quisenberry to the floor for his first action since early January as he averaged 20.5 in a pair of overtime wins on the road at RMU.
• Oakland’s Jalen Moore leads the country in assists at 8.0 per game, including 9.2 helpers during Horizon League play. He has posted nine 10-assist games and eight double-doubles during the League season, both best in the HL. The JUCO transfer is also averaging 19.6 points during the HL season, including eight 20-point efforts.
• #HLMBB boasts three of the top rebounders in the country as IUPUI’s Elyjah Goss (10.8), RMU’s AJ Bramah (10.3), Wright State’s Loudon Love (10.2) are all top-20 in the country in boards. Bramah is also 16th in the NCAA in scoring (22.0), while Love is seventh in double-doubles (9).
• Purdue Fort Wayne continues to be one of the best shooting teams in the country. Nationally, the Mastodons are 15th in field-goal percentage at 50.1 percent, including ranking third in 3-point shooting team at 40.4 percent from long range.
• A pair of Horizon League standouts were selected to the Lou Henson Award Midseason Watch List this week with Wright State’s Loudon Love and Oakland’s Jalen Moore making the list. The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in the country.
