YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO – The 2021 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships continued on Saturday with freshman Erin Bogard of Youngstown State setting a new League record in the women’s pole vault. Milwaukee currently leads the men’s competition with 160 points. Youngstown State leads in the women’s leaderboard with 166.5 points. The #HLTF Outdoor Championships conclude on Sunday, May 9 with competition moving into the Watson & Tressel Training Site due to forecasted inclement weather.
Erin Bogard set a new Horizon League record in the women’s pole vault, clearing 4.01m to win the event for the Penguins. Milwaukee senior, Jayde Wollenberg, cleared 3.81m to earn second on the podium. Third place was earned by Youngstown State’s Katlyn Griffie who vaulted 3.71m.
The Panthers swept the decathlon, led by freshman Austin Wallace who tallied 6,352 points. Fellow freshman Tony Bretall (5,724 points) was the second place finisher while senior Trevor Coenen (5,513 points) was third.
Youngstown State’s Olivia Jones defended her title in the heptathlon with 4,866 points to win the event. Her teammate, Emily Bee (4,742 points), was runner-up while Oakland’s Emily Schaub (4,706 points) took third.
Milwaukee senior Jacob Wendt defended his title as the men’s hammer champion, claiming the event with a 57.69-meter finish. Joseph Pfeffer of Youngstown State was the runner-up with 56.07m and third was Caleb Rogalski (55.11m) for the Panthers.
Freshmen Dominic Perry (16.77m) and Zach Gray (16.18m) took first and second in the men’s shot put for Youngstown State. The Penguins took the top two podium positions in the women’s section of the event, as junior Sammy Dyson won with 14.27m and freshman Lauren Sheehan (14.11m) as the runner-up. Youngstown State took the men’s and women’s titles in the longs jump with sophomore Jakari Lomax reaching 7.21m and senior Jessica Stever winning with a final of 5.77m. Wyatt Lefker of Youngstown State won the men’s pole vault after clearing 4.87m. Milwaukee’s Jack Johnson was the runner-up, reaching 4.67m.
Robert Morris freshman Keturah Hunter won the women’s hammer with a performance of 56.38m. Runner-up was Youngstown State’s Sammy Dyson (55.80m) and third place was Milwaukee senior Cecilia Petrie who finished with 50.52m.
Freshman Natalie Block of Milwaukee finished the 100-meter hurdles in 14.04 to be crowned champion. Detroit Mercy’s Kyri Jackson was runner-up with a finish of 14.15 while Purdue Fort Wayne’s Jesseca Hudson-Turpin (14.50) took third place. Milwaukee's Block picked up her second event win of the day in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 1:01.11. Next on the podium was Payton Sabourin of Oakland with a 1:02.62 performance. Rounding out the podium was Purdue Fort Wayne’s Jesseca Hudson-Turpin (1:04.44).
Youngstown State senior Collin Harden won the men’s 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.35 and tallied his third event win in the 400mH in 53.35. Milwaukee’s Sam Conger (14.37) was the runner-up and Marcus Nellum (14.48) of Oakland was third on the podium. Youngstown State freshmen Jahniya Bowers (11.78) and Kyndia Matlock (11.89) were the top finishers of the women’s 100-meter. The men’s 100-meter was won by sophomore Christian Ford (10.60) for the Penguins. The Penguins won the women’s 4x100-meter relay, closing the event in a time of 46.35.
Collin Harden was on top of the podium again for the Penguins after finishing in 53.35 to win the men’s 400-meter hurdles, his third title in the event.
Wright State’s Abigail Halsey was the women’s steeplechase champion, crossing the line in 10:50.98. Northern Kentucky.
Northern Kentucky’s Kyle Mastin set a new facility record in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with an 8:56.60 finish. UIC’s Martin Skucas (9:20.47) was the runner-up and Ethan Sparks (9:23.00) was the third place finisher for the Penguins. Northern Kentucky’s Lynsey Shipley was the top qualifier in the women’s 400-meter, crossing the line in 56.96. She was also the top qualifier in the 200-meter (24.13).
Alfreeda Goff Athlete of the Year, Jimmie Williams of Oakland, had the top qualifying time in the men’s 400-meter with a 47.61 finish and the top qualifying time in the 200-meter with 21.46. Oakland claimed the men’s 4x100-meter relay in a time of 41.12 to set a new facility record.
Cleveland State junior Anna Brandt was the top women’s qualifier in the 800-meter 2:14.93. Oakland freshman Terrence Brooks was the men’s 800-meter top qualifier with a time of 1:53.77. The 800 finals will be contested on Sunday at 1:50 p.m. ET.
