INDIANAPOLIS – The 2022-23 men's basketball season is in full swing with Wright State picking up a Power 5 win on the road at Louisville at the buzzer, while Youngstown State has jumped out to a 3-1 record in non-conference by scoring nearly 90 points a game. - Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis is on the brink of being one of the most prolific scorers in NCAA history. He begins the 2022-23 season just 137 points from the becoming the Horizon League’s all-time leading scorer and is 223 points from becoming the 11th player in NCAA history to score 3,000 points. The Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year sits 890 points away from Pete Maravich’s NCAA record of 3,667. Davis has been named to three national awards list this season: John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Watch List, Naismith Award for the Player of the Year and the Bob Cousy Award for the nation’s top point guard.
- Four Horizon League schools were ranked in the first CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll with the Purdue Fort Wayne leading the way at No. 24. Northern Kentucky, Wright State and Youngstown State each received votes in this week’s poll.
- Wright State, the defending tournament champions, are off to the hottest start of any Horizon League team. The Raiders knocked off Louisville at the buzzer to notch their third regular season victory over an ACC opponent under head coach Scott Nagy. WSU began the season with an exciting double overtime game against mid-major power Davidson that saw Preseason All-League Second Team selection Trey Calvin score a career-high 37 points. Wright State capped off the week with a 9-point victory at home over Bowling Green with four players in double figures led by Preseason All-League Second Team selection Amari Davis with 19.
- Youngstown State is also off to a great start to the season with a 3-1 record. YSU is leading the HL with 89.8 points per game and a 51.7 shooting percentage. Transfer Adrian Nelson already has totaled two double-doubles, tied for the third most in the nation, as he is averaging 16.8 points and 9.0 rebounds including a 27-point, 10-rebound performance against Notre Dame. All-Horizon League First Team selection Dwayne Cohill is also playing well to start the season averaging just under 15 points per game with three double-digit games.
- Purdue Fort Wayne is quickly back to being one of the best shooting teams from distance in the country. The Mastodons are already second in the country in 3-pointers made per game (14.3) and 36th in 3-point field goal percentage (41.7). Purdue Fort Wayne is also defending the 3-point line well as it holds opponents to just a 23.5 shooting percentage from long range.
- The ‘Dons were tied for No. 1 in the Horizon League Preseason Poll and received 17 first-place votes. Purdue Fort Wayne won a share of the regular season title last season in just its second year in the HL as they finished 15-6 during League play. Back for the ‘Dons is Preseason First Team selection Jarred Godfrey and the reigning Sixth Man of the Year Deonte Billups. Overall, Purdue Fort Wayne returns over 77 percent of its scoring from a season ago.
- Northern Kentucky’s Chris Brandon leads all of Division I men’s basketball in rebounding at 14.5 boards per game as he started the season with a 17-rebound performance against Kent State at home. As a team, the Norse are third in the country in offensive rebounds per game at 19.0 per game.
- NKU was also tied for the top spot in the Horizon League Preseason Poll and earned 15 first-place votes. Last season, the Norse reached its third championship game in four years and is the only team to earn three consecutive semifinal appearances since the championship moved to Indianapolis. NKU placed a League-high three players on Preseason All-League Teams as Marques Warrick earned first team honors, while reigning Freshman of the Year Sam Vinson and fifth-year senior Trevon Faulkner were tabbed to the second team.
- Deshon Parker of Cleveland State ranks top-10 in all of Division I in total assists (23), assists per game (7.7) and assist-to-turnover ratio (11.5).
- Oakland’s Trey Townsend leads the Horizon League in field goal percentage at 71.4 percent as the junior is averaging a team-best 15.7 points per game.
- The Golden Grizzlies return Preseason All-League First Team selection Jalen Moore who finished second in the country in assists per game last season after leading the country the prior season. Oakland’s Greg Kampe enters his 39th season at the helm of the Oakland men’s basketball program. He is the second-longest tenured active coach in Division I, only behind Jim Boeheim (Syracuse, 45 seasons). Kampe’s 663 career wins rank 12th among active Division I coaches.
- RMU’s Enoch Cheeks is tied for third in the HL in scoring at 18.5 points per game thanks to a 17-point performance against Ohio State to begin the season.
