INDIANAPOLIS – RMU opened up the 2022-23 season with four straight wins while Cleveland State earned a road victory at DePaul and ten teams picked up at least one win to highlight the first week of action.

#HLWBB NEWS & NOTES

  • In this week’s College Insider Women’s Mid-Major Top 25 poll, Youngstown State ranked No. 8 while Green Bay ranked No. 20 and Cleveland State, Oakland and RMU received votes.
  • Cleveland State earned a road victory at DePaul on Tuesday night as a Carmen Villalobos three-pointer as time was expiring knotted the contest at 76-76 to force overtime. Destiny Leo led the Viking offense with 22 points, while Barbara Zieniewska added 17, Deja Williams tallied 14 and Brittni Moore added 12 points in the win.
  • Paige Shy paced Youngstown State at Penn State on Tuesday with 19 points while Lilly Ritz added 12 points for the Penguins.
  • Kennedie Montue led Oakland with 12.0 points per game in the first three games of the season.
  • Amellia Bromenschenkel led Purdue Fort Wayne to a 2-1 week, with the Mastodons' only loss coming at Big Ten foe Michigan State. The junior guard scored in double-figures in all three games, scoring 22 in the season opener against Goshen, 11 at Michigan State and 26 against Bellarmine. Bromenschenkel did it efficiently, shooting an average of 65.7 percent from the floor and 68.8 percent from beyond the arc.
  • RMU opened the season with four home victories. Phoenix Gedeon paced the Colonials with 16.25 points per game and 7.0 rebounds as they opened the year 4-0 for the first time 1980-81. Mackenzie Amalia leads RMU with 4.0 assists per game.
  • Lindsey Duvall began the 2022-23 season with a bang as she helped lead the Norse to a triple-overtime victory over Lipscomb at home by a score of 101-95. In this matchup, Duvall totaled 36 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and committed zero fouls. She recorded four career-highs in points, rebounds, made free throws and free throws attempted.
  • Hailey Oskey led Green Bay with 19 points in the win over Marist on Saturday while Cassie Schiltz and Tatum Koenig also scored in double figures.
  • Irene Murua averaged a double-double with 11.7 points per game and 12.0 rebounds per game (36 total) while shooting 48.4 percent from the field in three contests last week helping Detroit Mercy to 1-2 non-conference start to the season. At North Dakota, Murua grabbed a career-high 17 boards while chipping in with six points. She followed that by scoring a team-high 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting with eight rebounds at Xavier. Murua saved the best for last by posting her first double-double of the season scoring a team-high 16 points while grabbing 11 rebounds with three steals to lead Detroit Mercy to a 70-65 home opening win over Canisius snapping a 24-game home court losing streak.
  • Four Jags scored in double figures as IUPUI picked up a win at Butler on Sunday. Jazmyn Turner led the team with 17 points and eight rebounds while Ali Berg added 15 points and Natalie Andersen and Destiny Perkins contributed 13 points each.
  • Freshman guard Kamy Peppler started all three games for the Panthers and totaled 15 points, nine assists, and six rebounds. The freshman went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the three contests. After putting up seven points in the opener against Wisconsin, Peppler dished out four assists and added two boards in a win over Loyola Chicago. She followed that with eight points and four assists against Marquette on Sunday.
  • Makiya Miller scored a team-leading 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and added two assists and one 3-point make in Wright State’s season opener at Toledo last Monday. Her point total was the most in a Raider freshman debut since 2018. The Reynoldsburg, Ohio native was at her best in the second half, netting 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
