INDIANAPOLIS – Thursday marked the first day of Horizon League play for the 2022-23 men’s basketball season and it was a historic day as Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis became the HL’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing the previous record of 2,914 points set by Loyola’s Alfredrick Hughes (1981-85). Davis scored 22 points to now move into 13th place in NCAA history.

The Titans went on to knock off one of the co-preseason favorites on the road, while Milwaukee and RMU also started League play with road wins. Other opening day action saw Northern Kentucky battle to double overtime to grab a victory at home, while Cleveland State also started HL play 1-0 and extended its overall win streak to five games.

Detroit Mercy 75, Purdue Fort Wayne 66

  • Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis scored a game-high 22 points with five 3-pointers en route to becoming the Horizon League’s all-time leading scorer. Davis had just 11 points with under four minutes to play and the Titans down three before finishing the game with another 11 points down the stretch for the win. The graduate senior hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put Detroit Mercy up 63-58 with the stepback jumper at the 2:27 mark giving him the League’s career scoring record.
  • The Titans make it back-to-back seasons of starting Horizon League play with a victory.
  • Gerald Liddell played his first game of the season for the Titans and totaled 16 points and 16 rebounds. Damezi Anderson also chipped in 16 points.
  • Purdue Fort Wayne’s Jarred Godfrey was one rebound shy of a double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Bobby Planutis tallied 18 points.
  • Detroit Mercy led by as many as 14 points early in the second half before Purdue Fort Wayne would go on a run to tie the game with just under 10 minutes to play. The Mastodons would take a 56-53 lead with 4:07 left in regulation before the Titans ended the game on a 22-10 run.
Cleveland State 80, Oakland 64
  • Cleveland State earned a win on the opening day of Horizon League play for the third-straight season.
  • Six CSU players scored in double figures led by Drew Lowder and Jayson Woodrich off the bench with 16 and 14, respectively. Deante Johnson recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Deshon Parker and Tristan Enaruna also scored 11 points.
  • Jalen Moore led the way for the Golden Grizzlies with 18 points, 10 from the free-throw line. Trey Townsend posted a double-double of his own with 13 points and 12 boards.
  • The Vikings won the rebounding battle, 53-30, and held a 20-point advantage in points in the paint, 48-28.
Northern Kentucky 77, Youngstown State 73 (2OT)
  • For the sixth time in the last seven seasons, Northern Kentucky won its opening League contest while also claiming its second consecutive double overtime victory.
  • NKU’s Marques Warrick continues to impress this season as he led all scorers with 30 points on 5-of-7 shooting from distance. Xavier Rhodes registered 15 points, while the reigning Freshman of the Year Sam Vinson picked up 13 points.
  • Malek Green and Dwayne Cohill both led the YSU offense with 21 points each. Green also grabbed 15 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.
  • Warrick sent the game to overtime with a jumper with less than 23 seconds to play in regulation followed by Rhodes hitting a 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining to go to double overtime. The Norse jumped out to a four-point lead to start the second OT and never trailed again thanks to a Trevon Faulkner jumper followed by a Warrick steal and lay up.
RMU 80, Wright State 59
  • For the second time since joining the Horizon League three seasons ago, RMU started Horizon League play with a victory.
  • Kahliel Spear shot a blistering 12-of-15 from the floor for the Colonials to finish with a game-high 27 points, while Josh Corbin hit five 3-pointers and also grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
  • WSU’s Tim Finke scored 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting from long range and Trey Calvin added 10 points.
  • The Colonials shot 52.5 percent from the floor, including 52.9 percent from 3-point range, and held one of the top scoring offenses in the country to just 41.5 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from distance to give the Raiders their first loss on the opening day HL play since the 2018-19 season.
Milwaukee 81, Green Bay 67
  • With the win tonight, Milwaukee runs its win streak to four-straight games and claims its second opening day win in three seasons.
  • Five Panthers scored in double figures led by Ahmad Rand with 13 points to go along with six rebounds and four blocks, followed by Markeith Browning II and Jalen Johnson each adding 12.
  • Green Bay’s Cade Meyer led all scorers with 19 points on nine-made field goals with Randy Tucker and Brock Heffner chipping in 12 apiece.
  • MKE shot 54.5 for the game, including nearly 60 percent in the first half, while holding Green Bay to just four 3-pointers on 23 attempts.
