INDIANAPOLIS – Saturday’s Horizon League action was highlighted by Purdue Fort Wayne winning an exciting overtime game in front of a national television audience on ESPNU. The home teams were dominant on Saturday as Cleveland State, Milwaukee and Northern Kentucky all defended their home floors to improve to 2-0 in #HLMBB play.

Purdue Fort Wayne 79, Oakland 73 (OT)

  • Purdue Fort Wayne picked up its first Horizon League win of the season on Saturday from the Gates Sports Center on campus, marking the first ESPN linear broadcast from campus in program history.
  • Bobby Planutis set a new career high with 20 points for the Mastodons, while Jarred Godfrey and Ra Kpedi each scored 14 points and Kpedi also grabbing 12 rebounds
  • Four Oakland players finished in double figures led by Keaton Hervey with a 21-point, 13-rebound performance and Rockets Watts with 20 points.
  • The ‘Dons held a 44-37 advantage on the boards and outscored the Golden Grizzlies 20-2 in second-chance points.
  • Purdue Fort Wayne led for most of the game but a late run by the Golden Grizzlies, highlighted by a 3-pointer by Jalen Moore with 11 seconds left, tied the score at 71 and forced the extra period. The Mastodons started the extra period on a 7-0 run on a Damian Chong Qui floater in the late followed by a Planutis triple in the corner to seal the win.
Cleveland State 92, Detroit Mercy 77
  • Cleveland State ended the first week of Horizon League play 2-0 and pushed its win streak to six consecutive games.
  • Tae Williams scored a career-high 23 points and added 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season for the Vikings. Yahel Hill scored 19 points and Deshon Parker added 17.
  • Coming off his career record-breaking performance on Thursday, Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis finished with 23 points. Gerald Liddell posted his second-straight double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
  • CSU shot over 50 percent from the game, including 45 percent from distance for its highest scoring output of the season, while holding the Titans, who were without three starterss due to illness or injury, to 38.8 percent shooting.
Northern Kentucky 60, RMU 56
  • Northern Kentucky won its third-straight game on Saturday and start Horizon League play 2-0 for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
  • NKU’s Trevon Faulkner led all scorers with 14 points followed by Marques Warrick with 13 and Xavier Rhodes with 12. Chris Brandon grabbed 10 rebounds for his league-best sixth double-digit effort this season.
  • Kahliel Spear and Enoich Cheeks led the RMU offense with 13 points each, while Josh Corbin chipped in 11 points with three 3-pointers.
  • Neither team led by more than seven points in the game and came down to the wire as Corbin his a triple with 1:27 in regulation to cut the Norse lead to just one. Northern Kentucky avoided a third-straight overtime game as Warrick hit three of four from the free throw line to secure the win.
Milwaukee 74, IUPUI 61
  • With the victory, Milwaukee has won five in a row and start HL play 2-0.
  • Kentrell Pullian led the Panthers with 18 points on 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Markeith Browining II added 12 and Justin Thomas scored 11. Ahmad Rand totaled five blocks which is tied for the most by a HL player this season.
  • Vincent Brady II scored a career-high 18 points for the Jags, while Jlynn Counter registered 10.
  • MKE rode a strong first half performance to the victory as the Panthers shot over 51 percent in the opening 20 minutes of action with eight 3-pointers.
