INDIANAPOLIS – The first week of Horizon League play wrapped up on Monday as all 11 teams return to non-conference action until #HLMBB play starts again on Thursday, Dec. 29.

#HLMBB NEWS & NOTES
  • Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis is on the brink of being one of the most prolific scorers in NCAA history. On Dec. 1 he came the Horizon League’s all-time leading scoring, surpassing the previous record of 2,914 points set by Loyola’s Alfredrick Hughes (1981-85). He currently sits at 2,942 points, putting him just 58 points from becoming the 11th player in NCAA history to score 3,000 points. The Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year sits 725 points away from Pete Maravich’s NCAA record of 3,667. He is the NCAA record holder with 120 consecutive games in double figures and his 461 3-pointers are first in Horizon League history and sixth in NCAA history, 48 away from Fletcher Magee's NCAA-record 509. Davis has been named to four national awards list this season: John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Watch List, Naismith Award for the Player of the Year, the Bob Cousy Award for the nation’s top point guard and the Lou Henson National Player of the Year.

  • Four #HLMBB Players were named to the Lou Henson National Player of the Year award watch list, presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I. The four players are Davis, Purdue Fort Wayne’s Jarred Godfrey, Oakland’s Trey Townsend and Northern Kentucky’s Marques Warrick.

  • Davis and Warrick have been two of the most prolific scorers in the country this season as they are both scoring over 20 points a game with Davis ranking fifth in the country at 23.1 points per game and Warrick averaging 21.6.

  • Cleveland State is the hottest team to come out of Week 1 of HL play as the Vikings have won six in a row including winning both of its #HLMBB by double digits. During the streak, CSU is holding opponents to an average of 61.3 points per game, and holding opponents to a combined 38 percent from the field. The Vikings have also been solid from the charity stripe throughout the win streak, shooting 75 percent from the free throw line.

  • Northern Kentucky won both of its home games over the opening League weekend to finish a perfect 2-0. The Norse started with a hard fought victory over Youngstown State in double overtime, 77-73, and ended with another title battle with RMU before pulling out the victory, 60-56. Warrick led the charge once again averaging 21.5 points, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists, including a 30-point performance in the win over the Penguins.

  • Milwaukee was one of three teams to finish the opening week of Horizon League play 2-0. The Panthers started HL play with a road win against in-state rival Green Bay, 81-67, before returning home to defeat IUPUI, 74-61, at home.

  • Two of the highest individual scoring games in the country this year have been by Horizon League players. Warrick scoring the most points in a single game in Division I this season with 45 in a double overtime win on 18-made field goals, while Youngstown State’s Dwayne Cohill posted 43 points in a road win against Wright State on 16-of-19 shooting. Both are also 1-2 in most field goals in a single game this season

  • Northern Kentucky’s Chris Brandon sits fifth in the nation in rebounds as he is grabbing 11.7 per game, including 4.1 offensive rebounds, which ranks seventh. Not far behind is Youngstown State’s Adrian Nelson who is 37th in the nation in rebounds per game with 9.3. Nelson is also fourth in double-doubles in the country with five as he is scoring 13.6 points per game.   

  • Three #HLMBB players rank inside the top-25 in the country in assists per game led by Oakland’s Jalen Moore and Cleveland State’s Deshon Parker at 5.9 per game along with Wright State’s Trey Calvin at 5.6.   

  • Milwaukee’s Ahmad Rand is one of the top shot blockers in the country as he is fifth in total blocks (27) and 16th in blocks per game (2.5). As a team, the Panthers are 15th in the nation in blocks per game (5.7).

  • RMU’s Josh Corbin has been one of the top sharpshooters in the HL this season as he leads the League in 3-point field goal percentage at 48.5 and is seventh nationally with 3.6 3-pointers per game. 

  • Wright State once again has one of the best offenses in the country The Raiders are scoring just under 80 points per game, while also ranking fifth in field goal percentage (51.6). Calvin leads WSU in scoring with 16.6 points per game, while freshman Brandon Noel is 14th in the country shooting 66.2 percent from the floor.

  • Youngstown State is 6-3 this season thanks in part to having the No. 1 scoring offense in the Horizon League at 83.1 points per game. The Penguins are also one of the most balanced scoring attacks in the HL as three players are rank inside the top-15 in scoring led by Cohill with 17.9, followed by Malek Green with 15.1 and Nelson with 13.6. All three players are also ranked inside the top five in field goal percentage as all three are shooting over 53 percent.

  • Purdue Fort Wayne is back to being one of the best shooting teams from distance in the country. The Mastodons are already 17th in the country in 3-pointers made per game (10.3) and third in 3-point field goal attempts (31.0). Purdue Fort Wayne is also strong defensively as the No. 1 scoring defense in the HL and are holding opponents to a 28.5 shooting percentage from long range.  Jarred Godfrey continues to do a little bit of everything for the ‘Dons as he is averaging 14.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.9 steals per game and is a perfect 29-for-29 from the free-throw line.

  • Oakland’s Trey Townsend continues to lead the Golden Grizzlies as he is fourth in the League in points (17.3) and field goal percentage (54.9), sixth in rebounds (7.6) and fourth in blocks (1.2).

  • Oakland’s Greg Kampe enters his 39th season at the helm of the Oakland men’s basketball program. He is the second-longest tenured active coach in Division I, only behind Jim Boeheim (Syracuse, 45 seasons) who faced one another on Dec. 6. Kampe’s 664 career wins ranks tied for 12th among active Division I coaches with Gonzaga’s Mark Few.
