Nike #HLMBB Players of the Week (February 14)
INDIANAPOLIS – Oakland’s Jamal Cain recorded three-straight 20-point performances including a 32-point, 12-rebound game against its Metro Series rival to earn his fourth Nike® #HLMBB Player of the Week honor of the season, while Northern Kentucky’s Sam Vinson collects his seventh Nike® #HLMBB Freshman of the Week award after averaging 15.7 points and 6.3 boards to help the Norse to a 3-0 week as the Horizon League announced its men’s basketball weekly honors on Monday.
HLMBB Player of the Week
Jamal Cain | Oakland | Redshirt Senior | Forward | Pontiac, Mich.
Cain secured his League-leading fourth Player of the Week honor of the season after averaging 27.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game to help the Golden Grizzlies go 2-1 last week and stay in second place in the HL standings. Cain began the week with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds in a loss at Youngstown State. The redshirt senior then scored 29 points on 10-made field goals, including three 3-pointers, in a 71-68 win at RMU. Cain ended the week with one of his best performances of the season as he totaled a season-best 32 points and 12 rebounds against rival Detroit Mercy for his League-best 13th double-double of the season. He went 11-for-20 from the floor and also 9-for-11 from the free throw line for his second 30-point performance of the season. For the week, Cain led the Horizon League in scoring, while also ranking top-10 in rebounds, field-goal percentage (52.6) and steals (2.7).
#HLMBB Freshman of the Week
Sam Vinson | Northern Kentucky | Freshman | Guard | Fort Thomas, Ky.
Vinson averaged 15.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steals in NKU’s 3-0 week on the road. Vinson began the week scoring 13 points and tied a career high with eight rebounds in the Norse’s 75-39 victory at Milwaukee. He added two assists and two steals. The freshman followed that up with 14 points, five rebounds and two assists in the Norse’s 71-62 triumph at Green Bay. Then, in Sunday’s 75-71 defeat of Wright State at the Nutter Center, Vinson contributed a team-high 20 points on 6-of-7 shooting and tied for the team’s rebounding lead with six boards. Vinson shot 48.4 percent for the week including a 35.3 percent mark beyond the arc. Vinson picks up his seventh Freshman of the Week honor of the season, tied for the third most in League history, and has now matched the same number of honors as his teammate Marques Warrick did from a season ago.
