Wright State Men, IUPUI Women Voted 2022 #HLGOLF Favorites
INDIANAPOLIS – Wright State has been unanimously selected the top team in the 2022 Horizon League Men’s Golf Preseason Poll while IUPUI was voted in the top spot in the 2022 Horizon League Women’s Golf Preseason Poll, as announced by the Horizon League office on Tuesday. The polls were voted on by the League’s head coaches.
Wright State was selected as the top team in the men’s poll, receiving all ten first-place votes, totaling 100 points. The Raiders return All-League First Team honorees Tyler Goecke and Mikkel Mathiesen and 2021 All-Tournament Team member Bryce Haney.
Defending champion Oakland collected 90 total points to finish second in the poll. The Golden Grizzlies bring back 2021 Golfer of the Year and Championship Medalist Thomas Giroux and Freshman of the Year Yaro Ilyenko, along with All-League Second Team honoree Colin Sikkenga.
Cleveland State and Purdue Fort Wayne tied for third in the men’s poll, earning 69 points each. The Vikings return Zak Supelak from the All-League Second Team while the Mastodons bring back Kasey Lilly from the 2021 All-Tournament Team.
Youngstown State earned the fifth spot in the poll (67 points) ahead of Green Bay (47 points), Northern Kentucky (32 points) and RMU (31 points). Detroit Mercy and IUPUI rounded out the men’s poll.
On the women’s side, IUPUI received four first-place votes and collected 66 total points to earn the title of preseason favorite. The Jaguars return All-League First Team selection Amelie Svedja, Freshman of the Year Shelby Busker and All-League Second Team member Kara Blair in 2022.
Green Bay earned a second-place finish in the preseason poll, totaling 61 points with two first-place votes. The Phoenix return All-League First Team selection Ashley Kulka as well as 2021 All-Tournament Team member Katie Warpinski.
Oakland finished third in the women’s poll, collecting 55 points, as 2021 All-League honorees Veronica Haque and Amalia Shahzan are back for the Golden Grizzlies. Defending champion Youngstown State was voted fourth in the preseason poll (47 points) with All-League First Team and All-Tournament Team performer Puthita Khuanrudee returning to lead the Penguins.
UIC (35 points) finished in fifth place in the poll, just ahead of Cleveland State (34 points) in sixth. Detroit Mercy, Purdue Fort Wayne and Northern Kentucky closed out the women’s poll.
The 2022 Horizon League men’s and women’s golf championships will take place April 24-26 at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
