Horizon League Announces 2022 #HLSB Awards

INDIANAPOLIS – Green Bay’s Alicia Peters is the Horizon League Softball Player of the Year while Oakland’s Sydney Campbell earned Pitcher of the Year honors, Cleveland State’s Melissa Holzopfel picked up Freshman of the Year recognition and Oakland’s Lauren Karn was selected Coach of the Year. All-League awards were voted on by the League’s head coaches.

Peters is the first Phoenix to garner Player of the Year honors as the graduate third baseman topped the League leaderboard with a .426 average, .809 slugging percentage and .547 on-base percentage in League contests. The Chico, California native added six home runs, 19 runs and 15 RBIs in those 25 games and also landed a spot on the All-League First Team.

Campbell picked up Pitcher of the Year and All-League First Team honors for the Golden Grizzlies. The redshirt-sophomore posted a 16-2 record in League play with a 1.14 ERA and 99 strikeouts as Oakland earned the regular season title. Campbell is the first Golden Grizzly to earn Pitcher of the Year honors.

Holzopfel earned Freshman of the Year, All-League First Team and All-Freshman Team honors in her first season with the Vikings. The rookie was 13-4 in the circle in #HLSB play with a 1.94 ERA with a League-best 140 strikeouts.

Karn was chosen as the Horizon League Coach of the Year as she led Oakland to its second regular season title with an 18-7 record. This is the first Coach of the Year honor for Karn who is in her fifth season leading the Golden Grizzlies.

Oakland collected four honorees on the All-League First Team with Lauren Griffith, Madison Jones and Jessie Munson joining Campbell. Green Bay had three total selections as Tiffany Giese and Jadin Justman joined Peters. Jenna Deang made it two Vikings on the All-League First Team while Jordan Jenkins and Kendyl McKeough represented Northern Kentucky and Tara McElligott represented UIC.

Student-athletes from eight institutions comprise the All-League Second Team. Green Bay and RMU led the way with three selections each; Becca Edwards, Samantha Saloun and pitcher Brittany Baneck for the Phoenix and Erika Bell, Taylor Rhinehart and Meadow Sacadura for the Colonials. CSU’s Becky Hurosky, IUPUI’s Rachael Gregory, Oakland’s Cammie Brummitt, Purdue Fort Wayne’s Brooke Wintlend, UIC’s Maica Ingles and Youngstown State pitcher Elle Buffenbarger also earned All-League Second Team recognition.

Along with All-League selections Holzopfel and Sacadura, the All-Freshman Team includes Green Bay’s Abby Gawlinski, IUPUI’s Kendal Calvert, NKU’s Alicia Flores, Oakland’s Madi Herrington, RMU’s Alaina Koutsogiani, UIC’s Grace Fleming and YSU’s Bree Kohler.
