Northern Kentucky Takes Top Spot in 2023-24 Under Armour #HLMBB Preseason Poll

INDIANAPOLIS (October 17, 2023) – 2023 #HLMBB champion Northern Kentucky earned the top spot in the 2023-24 Under Armour #HLMBB Preseason Poll in voting conducted by the League’s head coaches, SIDs and media members. Wright State’s Trey Calvin collected Preseason Player of the Year honors.

  • Northern Kentucky has sole possession of the top spot in the preseason poll this season after tying for first place ahead of last season. The Norse have won four #HLMBB championships in their first eight seasons in the League.
  • Calvin picks up Preseason Player of the Year honors for the Raiders following an All-League First Team performance in 2022-23, averaging 20.3 points and 3.7 assists per game.
  • Cleveland State’s Tristan Enaruna is the only other returning All-League First Team selection from 2022-23 but three All-League Second Team honorees, Milwaukee’s BJ Freeman, NKU’s Marques Warrick and Oakland’s Trey Townsend are back this season, all earning Preseason First Team accolades.
  • Oakland’s Greg Kampe enters his 40th season leading the Golden Grizzlies and is now the longest-tenured men’s basketball coach in the country.
  • Sundance Wicks takes the helm at Green Bay in his first season as head coach for the Phoenix.
  • The regular season will start on Monday, Nov. 6, and Horizon League play is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Nov. 29. The 2024 Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships are scheduled to culminate at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis March 11-12 with the mantra #MarchStartsHere.   • The Horizon League is implementing an enhanced approach to its men’s and women’s basketball schedules for the upcoming 2023-24 season in a major move for student-athletes and supporters. The improved approach offers the competitive equity of a non-travel partner schedule while also offering the sustainability benefits of a travel-partner schedule contributing to a better student-athlete experience.
