INDIANAPOLIS (October 17, 2023) – Youngstown State’s Hunter Christopher, Morgan Cole and Owen Brady, Purdue Fort Wayne’s Madison King, and Northern Kentucky’s Layla Henderson earned this week’s #HLXC weekly awards.
MEN’S RUNNER OF THE WEEK | HUNTER CHRISTOPHER | YOUNGSTOWN STATE | SENIOR | SALEM, OHIO
- Broke the 8k school record he set early this season by over 30 seconds with an incredible time of 23:17.5 at the Texas A&M Arturo Barrios Invitational
- Finished sixth out of a Power 5 national field of 365 runners at the invite
- Helped the Penguins to a sixth-place finish out of 39 teams, finishing ahead of numerous regionally ranked teams including in-state rival Ohio State
WOMEN’S RUNNER OF THE WEEK | MORGAN COLE | YOUNGSTOWN STATE | GRADUATE STUDENT | LOUISVILLE, OHIO
- Tied the 6k school record that had stood for a decade with a time of 20:41.8 at the Texas A&M Arturo Barrios Invitational
- Improved her previous personal-best 6k time of 21:11 by 30 seconds, running sub-21 minutes for the first time in her career
- Placed 54th out of a Power 5 national field of 385 runners at the invite
- Helped the Penguins to a 29th-place team finish out of 41 universities
WOMEN’S RUNNER OF THE WEEK | MADISON KING | PURDUE FORT WAYNE | SENIOR | NOBLESVILLE, IND.
- Finished third out of 199 runners at the Bradley Pink Classic Red Race
- Ran a new personal best 6k time of 20:43.8; the second-fastest 6k in school history
- Led the Mastodons to a 13th-place team finish out of 32 teams
MEN’S FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK | OWEN BRADY | YOUNGSTOWN STATE | REDSHIRT FRESHMAN | NEW PHILADELPHIA, OHIO
- Clocked a personal-best 8k time of 24:19.0 at the Texas A&M Arturo Barrios Invitational, besting his previous personal record by over a minute.
- Placed 58th out of a Power 5 national field of 365 runners at the invite.
- Now owns the fourth-fastest 8k time in YSU cross country’s 30-year history
WOMEN’S FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK | LAYLA HENDERSON | NORTHERN KENTUCKY | FRESHMAN | MAYSVILLE, KY.
- Finished 70th overall at the competitive Bradley Pink Classic
- Set a new personal best of 22:22.1 over the 6k distance
- Of the six Horizon League teams racing, Henderson was the first freshman from the league to finish
- First ever 6k at the collegiate level, and now ranks 10th at the distance in NKU school history
