Oakland Women and IUPUI Men Head into the Final Day of #HLSD Championships with the Lead

INDIANAPOLIS — The 2023 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships continued Friday at the IU Natatorium (NAT) with two new championship records. The Oakland women remain in the driver’s seat extending their leadvwith a score of 643. IUPUI holds tight to a slight edge in the men’s competition with a score of 616.
The 100 butterfly kicked off the night with Jordyn Shipps of Oakland being crowned the winner for the women with a time of 53.82, while Spencer Jyawook of IUPUI claimed first place at 46.27 for the men.
The men’s100 breast came down to .03 with Christian Bart of Oakland touching the wall first with a time of 51.91, a new championship record. Bella Gary finished the sweep with a time of 1:02.6.
Oakland finished the night with a sweep in the 400 medley relay. The women finished with a time of 3:41.50 and the men finished at 3:09.08, a new championship record.
Oakland’s Susan LaGrand claimed the women’s 400 IM title with a time of 4:13.7 and Jackson Nester claimed the title on the men’s side for Cleveland State beating the competition by nearly five seconds at 3:48.34.
The night continued with the IUPUI women claiming the 200 free by the means of Emmaleigh Zietlow at 1:47.54, and the Oakland men taking home first as Samuel McKenzie finished with a time of 1:36.28.
Oakland’s Marko Khotynetski won the 100 back with a time of 46.69 and Riley Melendy of Milwaukee claimed the women’s title with a time of 55.73.
The men’s 1-meter diving competition saw freshman standout Sebastian Otero of IUPUI claim the first place hardware with a score of 367.75. His teammate Alex Scott earned second with a score of 319.10. Milwaukee’s Jared Kleczka placed third with a score of 311.50
The 2023 #HLSD Championships will wrap up competition on Saturday, February 18 and champions will be crowned. Preliminaries will start at 10 a.m. ET and finals competition will begin at 5:30 p.m. ET. The competition will be streamed on ESPN+. Visit our
