TEMPE, Ariz. – For the first time in school history, the Belmont University men's tennis team is nationally ranked. The Bruins, who are off to an impressive 5-1 start, are ranked 74th in the nation with the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Top 75 Team Rankings released Tuesday.
Beginning its 2023 campaign a perfect 5-0, Belmont has defeated the likes of UNC Asheville, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, rival Lipscomb, Austin Peay and Lee University in convincing fashion. In their five victories, the Bruins gave up no more than two points in any match and earned 7-0 sweeps against the Mocs and the Governors.
The doubles duo of graduate student Marko Ilic and junior Riccardo Trione are an unblemished 5-0 at No. 1 doubles, while Trione has gone 6-0 between No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Junior Tomas Luis has also been outstanding in singles play, owning a 5-1 record on the year and unbeaten at No. 2 singles with a 4-0 mark.
After taking on nearby Southeastern Conference stalwart and 71st-ranked Vanderbilt down the road this past Sunday, Belmont continues a strenuous four-match road stretch this weekend in Louisville, Kentucky. The Bruins face 23rd-ranked Louisville Saturday at 1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET before heading to Bellarmine Sunday for an 11 a.m. CT/12 p.m. ET first serve.
